Yes it is possible to get infected from javascript, there are many worms and
viruses that are written in scripting languages. It is possible to get
infected by javascript even when you're not using IE, simply because a
program can be written to drop a javascript file and run it, however IE is
very vulnerable to script execution even more so then most other browsers.
Even having all of the latest patches for your computer as long as you have
Microsoft and are running IE it will always be possible for infection to
occur even if you have a good AV program, i suggest for the most part just
to set your security options high on your browser.
