I recently got an e-mail which claimed I owed e-bay 15 bucks.
I don't have have an e-bay account nor have I used it ever.
I deleted the e-mail immediately.
Yet shortly thereafter McAfee AV told me that the trojan "ebscam" had been
detected and cleaned.
There was no attachment as I recall and I did not click on anything.
What do you think?

In Outlook Express Goto Tools/Options/Read and check:
*Read all messages in plain text*
HTML email is very dfangerous and don't need any attachment to infect
your system.

Thank you, I have received phishing messages before and they were quite
elaborate, but this one was very plain it just looked like a completely
ordinary e-mail, absolutely nothing fancy.

The HTML code must have been hidden Wink

I deleted the message immediately anyway and therefore cannot examine it
more closely to figure it out.

But I will follow your advice.

Thanks also to the previous responder.

Are you using outlook express and if so do you have the preview panel
enabled? If the preview panel is enabled it almost the same as opening the
email and you can get a virus, etc. You can disable the preview pane at
view/layout under preview pane uncheck it. This will just display your
messages, which you can then highlight and delete them without actually
opening them in the preview panel.

Yes.

Just send the money to me, and I'll pay them for you. ;o)

Sent to the deleted items folder? Sent to the recycle bin?

Where did it find the trojan (that information should be logged in your
AV programs log)? It is possible that HTML e-mail could have caused
something to be placed in your temporary internet files folder and McAfee
found it there.

Attachments aren't always a necessary part of malicious e-mail. Just
opening an HTML e-mail can be equivalent to visiting a nefarious
website. In fact, there are other ways besides HTML to exploit OE.

In this case, it appears that you didn't get bit (unless you actually followed
the links in the e-mail).

On previous occasions I have found trojan / viruses in the temp. int. folder
but not this time.

It was in shell windows com fileassoc something like this I quote from
memory.
Can't find a trace of it in McAfee AV....

Check the tool bar, directly under under your menu bar. There should be
a button for preview pane. Click it for each mailbox you open. It
toggles the preview pane on and off. In the lates version of Outlook I
believe you can turn off HTML. I know you can create a "hack" in OfficeXP.

The Preview Pane button comes with *Advanced*, via Tools | Customise |
Toolbars.

Detection of items deleted in this manner can still be achieved unless and
until the folders are compacted. It is sort of the same as with files deleted
from the harddrive - they are still on the disk unless and until the disk is
defragmented and/or that data is overwritten with new data.
