From: <hmmm>

| A list of virus scanning sites was previously posted to alt.comp.freeware
| (see below). I've been using the main ones (Jotti and Virustotal for
| years). Do all these sites provide this service to get fees from the
| major AV program players, and to submit the stats (and file samples) to the
| various program manufacturers?

| In a similar vein, I'm guessing that's the reason for all the free versions
| of AV programs (and Avira's premium offers every so often). In addition to
| getting potential paying customers, they also benefit from that many more
| samples sent in by users. This helps them fine tune the definition files
| and attempt to be the first kid on the block with the scan alert.

| That said, how many programs not only find the virus but clean the file and
| whatever registry strings have been added? If you look at the part of the
| Symantec site which describes the trojans/viruses, the manual cleaning area
| is very specific and detailed. I know that most of us have criticized
| Norton in the past for it's heavy CPU use, but from all reports they've
| taken steps to reduce it. In addition, AV-Comparatives consisently has it
| rated as one of the best and that Symantec site is still the bible in
| figuring out how to manually clean an infection (other than getting advice
| from Wilders).

| (I'm taking the liberty of crossposting this to alt.comp.anti-virus to
| increase the number of comments as I normally would have asked this there).

| Thanks to Sysinternals' light whois program for making it easy to find this
| info. Their search has improved greatly over the last few months. I used
| to constantly get messages that indicated the site wasn't in the db or it
| just hung and returned a general "couldn't find" message.

I'm sorry I don't get the question.

BTW: ANUBIS is NOT a virus scanner.

DLipman~nospam~@Verizon.Net says...

I use Multi-AV every now and then, along with Avira... Avira being the
resident anti-virus. I like the Sophos, Trend Micro (I've used Trend
Micro for years), and Kaspersky combo, but downloading the KAV stuff is
a real pain in the arse. Is there another way to get the updated
definitions, without having to download these files ONE AT A TIME? Maybe
an all-in-one file? Thanks.

| In other words, I'm asking if it's correct that these sites are either non-
| profit organizations or profit making ventures, and that there must be some
| fee provided by the AV vendors in order for them to be maintained - and

| are the results of their scans forwarded to the vendors of those scanning
| engines used (I'm assuming that all the programs used on those sites have
| been donated).

They are not for profit. The results of their scans are NOT forwarded to participating AV
vendors the samples are forwarded to participating AV vendors.

I again state that ANUBIS is not an virus scanning site.

You might find them here...
ftp://updates2.kaspersky-labs.com/

The advantage of the way I do it it in the Multi AV is that it only downloads the updated
files.

All in all, it probably would be better than going to site, searching
for update, unzipping and all that. Thanks for the response.

That's my intent and objective in creating the Multi AV as a front-end to the AV scanners.

You could consider tuning out the the Kaspersky module altogether and
download instead KasperskyŽ AVPTool

Don't know. I probably was one of those 'lucky' users who never experienced
the chkdsk problem associated with Kaspersky.
