Post subject: virus or material at fault ?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

Hello !

I've had this problem since weeks ago, that I've tried getting rid off with
a full reinstallation of the system, as was advised by the technical support
of the company that sold me this laptop: automatic scrolling of IE or
Outlook to the end of the page when using arrow up or the "PgUp" key, or
seeing the cursor move to the end of a line text in notepad or wordpad, or
whatever, when using the left key or the touchpad to move it. The "up" arrow
also is a problem sometimes when starting the system, because it will
automatically scroll down the Windows XP recuperation station, instead of
starting normally with windows. Sometimes, it seems to whimsically get
worse, as when in order to use the touchpad to click links or do anything, I
have to press "escape" or it won't work.

Yesterday, the 2nd reinstallation I've tried, the same problems began, even
though, in case it was a virus caught on the internet, I activated the
firewall before even going online. First thing I did was downloading any
critical windows/norton update available.

Could it be that in case this was a virus, it infected my personnal files
(pictures, music, docs) and that when copying them back onto the drive, I
thus reinfected myself ? By the way, after I started successfully copying 1
1/2 of my data CDs, the DVD-Rom drive wouldn't want to read CD-R or CD-WR,
only Norah Jones made it to the player...

Could the material be at fault, or is this a virus ? Which could it be, and
how to get rid of it ?

Thanks for any enlightening advise and/or info Wink, any help will be muchly
appreciated (lambda user here),

it does sound like it could be a hardware problem...

do the problems only recur on a freshly installed system *after* you've
moved these suspect backups of yours back onto the computer or does it
without doing that as well? it 'might' be a virus or some other type of
malware, but it sounds more like a hardware problem to me...

There was Norton, which I installed and updated right after the Windows
updates. One hour after I reinstalled the system, I noticed the same
problems coming up, so I ran a virus analysis just to try, and nothing
special was detected.

Try housecall.trendmicro.com. Also, right after to put your FW up, did
you d/l all windows updates (www.windowsupdate.com). Does this problem
occur after you visit certain websites, or after just being connected to
the internet for so long?

If it don't work, hit it.
If it still don't work, kick it.
If it works after that, than it doesn't matter if that helped, what's
important is it works.

I've wondered about that too. Honestly, I couldn't tell because on my first
and second reinstall, I didn't *think immediately* of testing the touchpad
and arrows on the notepad or the browser before moving the back-ups. Super
silly, I know, it could have saved me a lot of time. That's why I have to
think of yet a 3rd reinstall, so that I could this time check on that, but I
wanted to be sure, 'cause it's a load of work. I was just so sure it had to
be a virus, the tech desk said so... I have to add, though, that the DVD-Rom
drive let me down in the middle of copying the 2nd back-up CD, the processus
started slowing down, then I decided to eject it and put it in again, but it
was no use. It wouldn't accept any CD-R or CD-WR. THEN, only, did I worry to
check on the scroll problem in IE and all other applications. Shame on me.

Yes, my very first connection was for the windows updates. I didn't notice
that it came from visiting one site in particular. I first noticed it in the
next hour of the reinstall and first online connection, but it might have
been there all along.

*So, this is no recognizable virus that anyone know of ?*

That's mainly what I want to be sure of before launching myself in yet
another reinstall, and also to know if it's safe or not for me to move back
in my back-up files. Then, if it doesn't work, I'll pick up my courage and
call packard bell help desk for the zillionth time.

Oh, I just checked, and the online scan I had made from www.secuser.com
seems to be the same than that one, and it did find nothing. But, thank you
for your interest.
