There is literally only one way to ensure a machine is completely clean:
format and reinstall the OS and applications from vendor-supplied media.

There was never any indication there was an infection on the PC. Receiving "...numerous
messages about 'undeliverd mail returned to sender'..." messages just means the HotMail
email address was harvested and used by a third party.

Right. But considering the OP's words, "[we] closed that hotmail account, so
hopefully the problem has been solved," I wanted the OP to know that closing
an e-mail account does not clean a machine, if the OP thinks the machine is
infected.

And if indeed the daughter spent a good time on domains of the dot-RU nature,
I would be dollars to donuts she has some form of malware.
