Post subject: Says it was a virus, now its gone and can't be found
Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

I recieved a email, which when I clicked on it to open it said that the
attachment could be dangereous and I should save it then scan it before
opening it. It was named either WORM.I or I.WORM. I did it what it said,
saved it. I didn't execute it (it was an .exe file). AVG popped up saying
that it was a virus and I should scan. I was already in the process of
doing an online scan (my first one, so it was downloading and installing the
stuff it needed for that) and at the end of the scan it said that no virus
was found. I didn't have it set to automatically clean up any found.

I did a scan with AVG which is upto date and that didn't find it either.
The file has disappeared and I can't find it. It was named something like
g0e0.exe It contained lower and uppercase letters with a definate .exe
extention.

I cannot figure out for the life of what has happened to this file. Or how
on earth I'm supposed to get rid of it if I can't find it!

Any help would be appreciated.

NiC

Just a guess, the on-access anti-virus you run prevented the attachment
from being actually written to your HD.

so that would be good? that means that its gone and didn't affect my
computer? i search for ages trying to find stuff about it and downloading
fix's of all sorts and all said that I had nothing but it's odviously very
concerning when you find you have a virus but then can't find it again!

thanks for your reply. Smile

yes and yes.
what we have here is slightly misleading messages from your scanner - when
it found the dodgy attachment in the mail, it suggested you save it to your
disk for scanning. actually your best choice would have been to just delete
the whole mail. you only want to save attachments to disk if you think you
want to keep them, and then you scan them to make sure they're clean. the av
was just avoiding suggesting deletion so that you couldn't blame it for
losing something you actually wanted.

Thankyou Bart, I did not know this. I hate when you only get one option. I
have written this down for future reference. Smile

That's good then. I've just been deleting absolutely everything that I
don't recognise now. To bad if its something that I should.
