Archived from groups: alt>comp>anti-virus (more info?)

Everytime I log on my AVG faithfully updates its virus definitions and I
stay up to date with virus that have been identified.

Until two weeks ago that is. My AVG hasn't updated since July 23rd. The
downloader starts every time I log on to the Internet, it just doesn't
download anything. I have had AVG for about 6 months now. Is there a
cut off after which you have to pay or is AVG not releasing updates at
the moment. I suppose a third possibility is that my software has
stopped functioning properly and I might need to uninstall and
reinstall.

Does anyone have any experience of this problem?

Thanks
Bill

I've been running AVG Free for over a year set up to automatically check for
updates each morning. I show Program Version 7.0.338 , Virus Base
267.10.3/66 Release Date 8/8/2005 8:20:00 PM. No problem here.

Yes. I got the original source from a free CD. It has been updating
successfully for the last 6 months. I read the AVG forums ...
aparently one fix is to "Do a search for the upd7bin folder and remove
its contents and see what happens.".

I'll try that and see if it works. Nothing else I've tried has so far.

Are you sure you originally downloaded the FREE version. I know 2 people who
heard about AVG and it being free but by mistake downloaded the non-free version
with a 30 day trial. So it works for 30 days. Look for words "AVG Free Edition"
when you mouse-over the icon in tray or open the app.

Whoops... I now see where you said you have been using AVG for 6 months.

That fixed it. The AVG forum and website are pretty invaluable and
provide first rate support. Many thanks to whoever suggested checking
them out.

Bill,
Can I ask where you found upd7bin? I have the same problem that AVG
no longer automatically connects and downloads. I have XP but cannot
find the file named.
Thanks,

To answer my own question - I should have thought of Google or making
it possible to search hidden files.

C:/Documents & Settings/All Users/Application
Data/Grisoft/AVG7Data/upd7bin

In Win98, the hosts file is c:\windows\hosts

If you don't have such a file, create one in notepad and put just the line
in the text file as:

193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com

Make sure the resulting text file has no extension. Just hosts, not
hosts.txt and put it in c:\windows\

As TaxMan said, just create it with Notepad, save as "Hosts" (no quotes, no
extension) in C:\Windows. Below is the content of my Hosts.sam file. Copy it
into your Hosts file if you want, or make a Hosts.sam file. For AVG, add
"193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com" (without quotes) at the end.
