Symantec's antivirus has been reliable for me for years, but it is
expensive. So today, I bought McAfee 8.0 today, because it was
cheaper.

It has installed okay, but when I go to update to get the latest
antivirus definitions etc, a window comes up saying something to the
effect "Please wait while McAfee VirusScan checks if any updates are
available".

And then, this window says there... and stays there... and stays
there. There are no updates.

Should I trash the McAfee, admit a mistake and go out and buy Norton
by Symantec, or can someone help me round this problem?

Thx.

There are updates. Why your updates are not updating is a
question. Are you using an administrator account while
doing the update? Did you completely install and register
with McAfee on-line? Have you contacted McAfee tech support
about the problem?

You are wasting time asking here, this is a Microsoft
Windows (XP) group. Your problem is with McAfee and they
have excellent email support and even chat available. They
also have telephone support.
