Post subject: McAfee updated then msconfig gives "access denied, log in as admin" error
Archived from groups: alt>comp>anti-virus (more info?)

After a McAfee Security Suite update two days ago msconfig started giving me
the subject error message.
I'm the admin and no other user accounts are on this computer.
I can still enable or disable stuff in startup and services with msconfig,
but the message persists.

No real problem there, but the message is annoying me.

Anyone know a fix for this? I've tried everything I found in google.

I'm using the 90 day eval with a new computer, so if I don't buy McAfee I'll
delete it all using
add/remove programs and the MCPR.exe tool.

If all else fails will ridding my computer of McAfee restore msconfig to
it's original state?

You didn't mention whether you have XP or Vista - but have you tried booting
into safe mode (fCool, and logging in as Administrator from there? Try
MsConfig from there.

XP Pro SP2
MsConfig still works even though I get the message about admin rights
needed. Any changes I make
do show up after a restart.
I'll test in safe mode.

Have you recently updated any HP drivers?
The problem in many cases is due to HP's PML Driver Update...

"Tonight, I updated my HP 8200 Photosmart software. Since then, I've
been receiving "access denied" messages when trying to use msconfig and
when trying to disable the HPZ12 PML driver when running services.msc
(Error 5: Access Denied).
I found the solution in another forum on how to fix the "access denied"
messages and how to disable the hpzipm12.exe program from loading
automatically when running services.msc (for those having these problems
after updating your HP PML software.
Run RegEdit.
Under /HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/PML Driver HPZ12, click on
Start at the right, and then change the Dword value from 2 (automatic)
or 3 (I believe for manual) to 4 (for disabled)."

Thank you jen. I do have an HP printer and saw similar probs in a google
search, so I asked
HP tech support. They sent me specific regedit instructions for my
particular printer but it didn't help.
When I told them it didn't work they said "then it's a virus/trojan/worm"...
but I know it isn't.

HP Access denied utility.
Uninstall HP driver first... see instructions.

That's an entirely different problem from 2004... Try the reg fix in
my message. It has worked in cases such as yours.

HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/PML Driver HPZ12,
doesn't exist. Nor does a search for pml or hpz12 produce anything.
