You cannot add new servers in the free edition however you can use this
sneaky little fix I came up with.
Your hosts file in windows 9x/me is in your windows folder with no
extension.
In XP/2k its in windows\system32\drivers\etc with no extension.
1. Open up your hosts file in notepad.
2. Add the following line
193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com
What this does is actually tells your computer to connect to www.grisoft.com
(which works) and not guru.grisoft.com to perform updates.

I use Win98SE but I've got no HOSTS file in Windows - just HOSTS.SAM. AVG6
used to have a .INI file.
PS. Don't you mean "193.86.103.19 www.grisoft.com"

If you have no HOSTS file, then you copy or rename the HOSTS.SAM file to
HOSTS, then edit that. I guess that the .SAM stands for "sample".
>PS. Don't you mean "193.86.103.19 www.grisoft.com"
I cannot say, I have not tried it myself, but no I would say he said
just what he meant.
The effect of the a "193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com" in HOSTS would be
to make any client trying to access guru.grisoft.com, which is
presumably what update the client does, to access 193.86.103.19 rather
than "193.86.3.34" which DNS would otherwise indicate.

I can't find the file either, been through system32/drivers/etc, there
are 6 files none of which relate to AVG /c;

Right - created hosts from hosts.sam, added the line, rebooted, but no
difference. Still slow to download updates and Update Manager/Settings/URL
hasn't changed (or should it?).
What am I doing wrong?

The hosts file is not related to AVG, it is related to a networking
'feature' you may or may not be using. It is like a mini-DNS stored
locally that the user can edit. >> Stay informed about: AVG update server is so slow |

Cannor be sure.
Try from a command line doing:
ping guru.grisoft.com
to see what IP address it pings.

Fantastic! This was bugging me this morning as guru appears to be
dead... now I'm completely up to date. Nice one! >> Stay informed about: AVG update server is so slow |

If it is pinging 193.86.103.19, then I for one do not know what else to
suggest, sorry.
The HOSTS file is doing what it is supposed to.
