I'm using a XP Home SP2 computer with AVG Free Edition v. 6.0.769. I
have it set to check for updates every morning.

After I came home from work today, AVG was running, which surprised
me. However, the definitions were still 9/22. I did a manual update and
updated to 9/24. So does this mean AVG will not update on its own? Perhaps
all it will do is turn on at the scheduled update time, and then expect me
to click the update button?

You do not always get updated definitions every single day and it may
well be that the later ones had been added just before you did the
manual update. What should happen is that the scheduled updater does
what it says and if there are new def's a box pops up showing details
and with a sixty second countdown; if you are there to OK this it cuts
the countdown short but if not it will install them after one minute.
Everything closes down then until the time you have set for the scan
proper. I have the scan set to five minutes behind the scheduled
update, possibly your scheduled scan is set for a much later time.
