It's a free anti virus program which causes some of its users to post
to usenet proclaiming updates, rather than allowing other users of AVG
to discover this on their own when they update.

I think its a hangover from the old days.
Version 6 was written in the days when most ppl had dialups, and the update
file was almost always a couple of megs.
Later versions of 6 and all of 7 are now updated by (usually) small
patches, and anyway nost ppl have broadband so I usually set mine to look
for updates every day.

Yes. A "virus" system, and an "anti-virus" system would be different things.

AVG is an anti-virus program. :O)
