McAfee doesn't update

Hi Everyone

I've recently installed McAfee System Protection on a small LAN, with the
server bits of it running on Windows 2003 SBS.

In theory, the 'protection pilot' is supposed to check for updated virus
definitions from the McAfee website once an hour, but in practice it
doesn't. It says that it is set to update, but under the last update and
next update settings, it just says 'unknown' rather than giving the time and
date. I left it for a week to see if it would, but it didn't. A manual
update updates everything just fine.

I did try looking on the McAfee technical support website, and couldn't find
anything. I even tried phoning their technical support, but said that they
wouldn't help me without a 'grant number', which I don't seem to be able to
get as I need a registration card, which didn't seem to be included in my
box (the software came with a new computer).

Does anyone know what needs to be done to fix it? And why can't anyone seem
to make software that just works? Didn't anyone at McAfee think that it
might be quite important to update the virus definitions regularly?
