Hi all.
This is the second time I had encountered this, but don't exactly
know what it is. One of my client's machines would run the internet
based AV scanners, which would detect and remove various
viruses/trojans/worms, but when I tried to run Lavasoft AdAware, even
after an uninstall/reinstall that upgraded from 6.0 to the new AdAware
SE, when trying to update the def. files (which were several months
old), it would say that not definition updates were available, even
though I knew that there had to be updates available due to the age of
the reference file. Has anyone else here encountered this and know what
it might be.

the moral of the story: going to bars can give you a headache, but
passing them by might get you stitches. >> Stay informed about: AdAware won't update |

I have, in the interim I just manually updated the ref list. Once all the
system was clean the problem went away. I never identified the culprit, but
you can be assured that some malware targets adaware to prevent detection. I
have seen the what you describe, I have also seen the update appear to work
but never update the file, and I have seen malware that added itself to
Adaware's ignore list. >> Stay informed about: AdAware won't update |

Will,
If you've updated to the current Ad-aware SE build - 1.05 - there are no
newer def files than the one it installs with. Even if you didn't take the
option to uninstall the old version, the new version will nonetheless be in
a different sub-folder (of C:\Program Files\Lavasoft), so would still be
using the current def file even if they were interchangeable (but they're
not).

Not true, the most recent file is SE1R9 23.09.2004 >> Stay informed about: AdAware won't update |

So I see. Thanks for the heads up.
In which case: before *today* there were no updated def files for Ad-aware
SE1.05. Or, indeed, SE 1.04.
