Last year, I purchased the NAV professional 2003 version (for 2 computers).
It expires in April. Not quite sure what to do as of yet. It will cost
only $20 to update this program vs. big bucks to change to another program.
I was just planning on retiring this one early. But amazingly, NAV just
provided an automatic update this last Sat.! Is there still hope for them
yet? And I keep hoping that they will switch to regularly scheduled, daily,
"automatic updates" (including weekends). Has anyone heard any rumors?
I already have the key for the Kaspersky free trial. But, Kaspersky
personal edition is quite expensive for 2 computers ($94). The Personal Pro
would cost $152. Is the Kaspersky Inspector and Office Guard worth paying
$58 extra? Hmmm... Just noticed that their US contact prices are different
from their main website ($85 and $170).
I heard Mcafee is switching to daily updates in the near future. And they
want only $39.99 for the professional version (2 computers) after rebate.
So maybe I will try their trial software when they do make the changes.
Has anyone had experience with Kaspersky and Mcafee missing viruses. (I
already know that NAV has left downloader variants on my computer for days
to weeks. Depending on the variant. They were all acquired at the same
time by my daughter. TDS-3 got some of them. And I had to manually pick
through my files and registry for the rest. But I missed one and of course
that was the one found weeks later.)
Oh.... decisions.... decisions.... Opinions please?

No AV is full proof, and should only be relied on as a last layer of
defence, so yes, Kapersky will eventually miss a virus on someone's
computer. It might be better then Norton (at least that's the
concensus), but I wouldn't know, since I hadn't tried Kapersky.

Ihave never heard that Kaspersky had missed a virus. It can be
modified to detect spyware, dialers etc. malware too. And for a normal
user both Inspector and office Guard are quite unnecessary. If money
is no problem Then choose Kaspersky.
What I have read recently McAfee in its current versions is a very
good solution too. But if your budget is thight Norton vwill do the
job too.

Thanx for both of your replies. I do understand that no virus protection is
foolproof. But I do want the best protection possible. Having been loyal
to NAV for 6 years just makes it harder to switch.
I suspect that recently the "true colors" of NAV have come out. You don't
know how good a product is until you actually do need it. (Sort of like
health insurance.) With all the recent surges in viral activity, NAV just
hasn't been holding its ground with speedy, good quality updates.
When I have the time, I will remove all signs of NAV and give Kaspersky a
try. I just downloaded it. If you like, I will let you all know what I
think. They sent me keys for 3 products: KAV personal, personal pro, and
antihacker.
PS. Bill, why don't you give the free trial a try too?

Currently, I'm using Sophos (provided free through my UC) and
supplementing it with avast as my on-demand scanner. That should do it
for now, I'm probably going to go back to NAV, though, for just AV
protection, and of course, suplemented by Avast. I still would like to
know which realtime scanner would be better as far as detecting
millicious activity/malware. Oh, BTW, does anyone know if avast passe s
the eircar test? I only ask because I didn't install the avast real
time scanner (already have w/ sophos), and removed avast from my run
registry key so it wouldn't load in the background during win startup.
So I wonder if the program needs to be loaded in the background, even
though there's no real time scanning component to it.

BTW, I managed to get Avast to pass the eicar test. Sophos was
detecting it before avast was able to scan it, and blocking avast from
accessing it.

Learn how to modify the updates download sites and ad after every ftp
and http address this directory: updates_x
Then KAV will download the special definiton files for adware,
dialers, etc. It is worth the modification.

Jari, I am intrigued. Please explain this further? Do I need to have an
/update and an /update_x for each site? Also, why doesn't it do this in
the first place?

The /update_x directory just contains additional "definitions" that
the /update directory doesn't contain (with good reason).
If you decide to get your updates from the /update_x directory,
beware... those extra defs will alert on all sorts of "stuff" and
you'll need to be more informed as to what exactly the "stuff" is
that's causing alerts.
For example, when I use the extra defs, KAV alerts on a zip archive
that contains "Radmin" which is a remote access "tool". It can
potentially be used nefariously, but is not even installed on my
system. Therefore, it's kind of a "false positive" in my case but on
someone else's system.... well there ya go.
>Also, why doesn't it do this in
>the first place?
I think because those extra defs are very sensitive (and more geared
towards the knowledgable users) and would likely cause the average
"victim" additional grief resulting from overzealous "cleaning" and
deleting of "suspicious" files.

Very good word of warning Clay. I think KAV 5 will use these
definitions default?
And about the original question as Clay stated; No you set your update
addresses only to use the /updates_x directory

Makes sense Jari. I was a bit tired last night and now realize it was a
stupid question. But, those update_x files are overly sensitive to several
harmless old files that I have stowed away. And even winamps uninstall file
is reported as adware. So I just chose a report only. Doesn't this program
have an ignore function? I had to also disable my quarantine temporarily
due to this. It would not let up, #@#$!
Due to its hx of false positives, I have opted not to use that update site
any longer. My Pestpatrol does a great job, and it is all that I need for
spyware. You see, I don't mind paying if a software performs well.
You seem to know a lot about KAV. Thanx for your help.
