Hi all,

I've encountered a problem that I can't seem to resolve and was
wondering if it might be a virus...
I seem to be able to connect to my ISP okay (get usual confirmation
message saying so) but then I can't browse any websites with either
Internet Explorer or Opera; I just get the familiar "can't display this
page/website may be down/check your internet connection/check your
browser settings" that I get when my phone line's not plugged in. The
modem is not faulty (checked on spare computer). I've been through the
settings with my ISP and nothing appears to be amiss. Has anyone know
of a virus which could cause this? Since I can't connect to the
Symantec site, I can't update my AV software to check for any nasties.
Platform etc.: Dell C600 laptop/Win2K/Wannadoo Broadband.

In case he doesn't return, below is the message which was crossposted

|Okay, thanks all.
|I finally tracked the problem down to having momentarily inserted a PCI
|network card/modem. Doing this must have screwed something up somewhere
|- a driver conflict? I'd have mentioned this in the original post if
|I'd thought it of the least relevance. I'm quite amazed at the amount
|of time this seemingly innocuous act has cost me. If anyone knows why
|the system went tits-up, I'd be keen to learn.
|Thanks again, guys.
