Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

I've been scratching my head for 3 days with a friend's computer (a
Dell running Win XP Home). I've run McAfee Stinger, Avast, and
Adaware. Any attempt to run Internet Explorer results in the icons and
task bar disappearing for a second or two, then redrawing and IE never
runs. Same thing with Control Panel. Same thing with Windows Explorer
when clicking on My Computer. I've been through HKEY_LOCAL_ Machine
\SOFTWARE\microsoft\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\Run and deleted anything
that I didn't recognize, but nothing's changed. I went through \windows
and \windows\system32 and deleted anything suspicious.

Of course anything I've run was copied to a CD and transferred from my
XP Pro machine, since I can't configure the networking stuff from
Control Panel.

I'd welcome any ideas of where to go from here. She has a lot of
applications installed that would take days to reinstall if she can
even find the disks after just moving here.

Thanks,

Casey

Sounds like Control Panel, Windows Explorer, and Internet Explorer
share a corrupt file.

If so, I'd love to know what file that might be.

I also use Win XP home, and just tried the command. It doesn't work as
typed on my machine. If it doesn't work for you, try putting in the run
box c:\windows\system32\scf /scannow, and it should work.

If it don't work, hit it.
If it still don't work, kick it.
If it works after that, than it doesn't matter if that helped, what's
important is it works.

Check the Event Viewer (Start/run/eventvwr.msc) and look for mention of
"Winlogon" or Explorer. You'll see mention of "Explorer.exe terminated
unexpectedly..." There might be more details.

Uh... there is no scf on her machine at all. It doesn't run on my XP
Pro machine nor on my son's XP Home box either. Is this an optional
installation item?

Okay, nevermind. All the boxes seem to have sfc.exe (instead of scf)
so I'm trying it now. Smile

Ya, I figured it out that in the run dialogue box, I type scf, but when
typing the system32 path, I typed sfc. Apparently, it works even if you
don't type the full path.

Thanks for the suggestion, Tim.

All I can find are many entries that say, "The shell stopped
unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted".
