F-prot run amuck?

Newby apologies, but I am a bit provoked.

Norton expired, so I bought F-Prot for Windows 3.14b.
I installed it on an NT4 workstation (SP6a).
Custom install but accepted all defaults.
It requested a re-boot.
Progress stopped at splash screen.
No login box, no repsonse to CTRL-ALT-DEL.
No response to network, including ping.
No fail to start message box, for missing external SCSI tape drive.
Disk LED bright, continuous.
FOUR HOURS and no change.

Is it doing an unannounced full scan? With no warning -- VERY BAD.
Is it hosed? Almost as bad.

There is no tech support offered until after 0800 GMT. How long after
remains to be seen.

Can/will anyone offer any knowledge-based advice?
