Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

I received a laptop that had Norton Antivirus on it. It has been a year
and I don't want Norton anymore (I don't want ANY Symantec product.)
I ran SymNRT.exe, which is supposed to remove Norton Antivirus and
several other Norton products.
I've begun getting a startup problem which is a box like follows:

Windows can't find C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUSetup.exe.
Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To searc
for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
|OK|

In my enthusiasm to get rid of Norton, I saw that some Symantec
folders remained in my Program Files folder and I deleted them manually.

I thought maybe if I got rid of references to Symantec and Norton with
regedit, that might help. I didn't make any changes to the registry, but
did find, using regedit (Win XP), did find tens of Symantec and Norton
references there.

My laptop works OK, but I find it frustrating that I don't want anything
Symantec and it seems to have taken over my computer. I've had viruses
that were much easier to clean. You know what I mean.

There's a Symantec core LC service that is still there that I think is
part of Norton automatic signatures update.

How can I get rid of Norton?

Norton Antivirus has no 'uninstall' option in the Start menu, nor is
there any reference to it in the Add/Remove programs. That's why
Symantec put out a Symnrt.exe program to remove it. If I could tell
a program doesn't have an uninstall, I wouldn't install it.

Thanks, I'll try HJT. If I recall, it makes an extensive list of running,
starting, booting entries, but I don't think it has a way to get rid of
something you see that you don't want.

I run hjt and get a hklm runonce reference to LUupdate startup item.
I tried to stop the startup error using hjt. That didn't work.
I used regedit and removed most references to Norton and Symantec. That
didn't work.
I made some progress. I now know that something is running
at startup that checks to see if the LUsetup.exe is loading, and
if not, re-installs the HKLM runonce. I did this using
Codestuff Starter, a program lists startup items and allows
disabling the item. I disabled LUsetup.exe. re-boot and
I still get the startup error, but Codestuff Starter now shows
a new LUsetup.exe entry ie. something is re-installing LUsetup.
Here's the reference in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Lusetup]
C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUSetup.exe -s -a -q -log -version

And here's two lines from Codestuff Starter.

Lusetup,"C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUSetup.exe -s -a -q -log -version","Registry
- Machine RunOnce"
Lusetup,"C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUSetup.exe -s -a -q -log -version","Registry
- Machine RunOnce"

I probably should be posting to a HJT forum. Thanks.
