Windows just started asking for a password which I haven't set. Everytime I
leave the computer for a few minutes and it 'sleeps' when I wake it I have
to reboot because I don't have the password. I can no longer run Nortons
antivirus either. I tried running an online virus/malware checker but it
wouldn't install, and the online scanner won't work either. It will not let
me go into safe mode, it just keeps relooping.

I would be very grateful if anyone could tell me how to get rid of it.

Cheers,
Alexandra

Thanks for the website it detected Backdoor.SdBot.gen

Now I have to get rid of it but am not excited at the thought of editing the
registry. Does anyone know of any free software that may get rid of this?

Thanks,
Alexandra

What file? Klex didn't mention any specific file name.

Klex, if you would mention what version of what Operating System you
have, someone could help you with the password on screensaver. If it is
Windows 2000 (try it anyway), right-click on desktop, choose Properties,
Screensaver tab, and Uncheck the [ ] Password protected box.

You can also change the "time to sleep" there. "A few minutes" seems a
bit short; set it to at least 15 minutes.

Regarding Norton anti-virus, dump that hog and get something (free) that
doesn't use all your computer's resources. See:
http://k75s.home.att.net/tips.html#av

Read this too and get the Norton complete removal tool, else you never
will be able to do that.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.
