In light of the recent vulnerability discovered with the ask.com toolbar,
do you feel that antispyware programs should detect toolbars of any sort
and offer to remove them? As it is, on occasion we get toolbars we didn't
intend to get...

Opinions on this are welcome.

I think any anti-spyware/malware detector type program should have an
option to remove toolbars; because sometimes even if you uncheck the option
to install them when they come with a program they get installed anyway.
After all anyone using a anti-spyware/malware type program most likely
doesn't know how to remove a toolbar theirself. Personally I haven't used a
AV or anti-spyware/malware type program in years; because I have found that
with OE/O set to view all email in text only format nothing gets in, well at
least nothing as of yet or that I know of<s> Same thing with IE7 with
activex/scripting/and others turned off it is reasonably safe. Besides when
ever I want to cruze questionable sites or go on IRC I boot up a live CD of
ubuntu and cruze those type sites safely, lol

YES !
I would even PAY for a product that would lock out ALL TOOLBARS, and any
software that even "offers" to install one for me.

I don't know why Microsoft hasn't come out with a "toolbar remover" product.
Since they are the ones who allowed them in the first place.

It wasn't intentional in so far as that regard. I'm interested in peoples
opinions. I was thinking of Adding all known toolbars that I can find to
BugHunter depending on user point of view. As a security precaution.

Do you have any opinion on it?

It would be a nice option if you could get a list of installed toolbars and
pick which ones to uninstall. A blanket uninstall may cause more frustration
than it's worth for unsophisticated users. They may use the option to remove
an unwanted toolbar then wonder where their google bar went.

It didn't say anything about *altering* the images for PARODY or
SATIRE. Wink

In fact, if all of us didn't know better, Dimbulb, we'd think those
silly images of you with the guns and giant bullets (that you sent
me, and now posted to myspace) were ALREADY retouched! Very Happy

So really! What's the difference? Now, you're winking, as if to say
your "Sugien" persona is all in fun, and you're really not like that

So which is it, Sooooooooooooge? Are you just messing with us and

really the dumb, ol' hillbilly you are on Usenet?

Oh, and speaking of myspace, can I "friend" you? I see you only have
three friends. Well, actually, they're not "friends", they're your
kids.

So ya wanna be my myspace friend, Sugien?

You need to read the EULA yourself. If it's not obvious, e.g. it's
not a separate paragraph, but hidden in a long paragraph of legalese,
the you should probably include it.

>Agreed, but have you seen many that do?

I download *a lot* of freeware. IIRC, almost all made it clear that
the bundled toolbar was optional, or in some cases, mandatory in
order to use the program. I know that when I've clicked "no" in
several cases, the program wouldn't continue the installation. I
think I remember getting a toolbar only once without my permission.
Either that, or mention of it in the EULA was so hidden that I missed
it. Probably the latter.

>I'm thinking detecting toolbars (and clearly labeling them as
>toolbars, not necessarily malicious) isn't such a bad idea.

I don't think you should detect the Google toolbar, or similar ones
that are separate installs. These type of toolbars people *seek out*
and install. Only ones that come bundled and aren't *clearly*
labeled.

Thanks for your input. I am already working on the let the user pick after
the scan is completed. Smile and since I'm redoing some aspects of the code, I
wanted to get a general opinion on toolbars.

My opinion is I haven't seen one I'd install on any of my computers.
