Post subject: The list of file extensions recommended to include for an on demand scan
Archived from groups: alt>comp>anti-virus (more info?)

Dear friends:

Most of the Antivirus products, when they do an on demand scan, they
check only the files with predefined extensions which are contained in
a "default list".

Is there a "consent" of the default list of the predefined file
extensions that they should be checked in an on demand scan?

Where can I get a copy of this "commonly accepted default list" in
order to compare it with the list of my Antivirus product?

Thanks

The following is McAfee's default list...

DL? EX? ACM ADE ADP ADT AP? ASA ASD ASP AX? B64 BA? BIN BMP

BO? CGI CC? CDX CEO CHM CLA CMD CNV CO? CPL CPT CPY CRT CSC

CSS DAT DEV DOC DOT DRV EE? EFV EML FDF FE? FMT FO? FPH FPW

GWI HDI HHT HLP HT? HWD IM? IN? ION ISP ITS JAR JP? JS? LGP

LNK LWP LIB LUA M3U MBR MB0 MB1 MB2 MD? MHT MOD MPD MRC MS?

NEW NWS OB? OC? OD? OL? OUT OV? PCD PCI PD? PF? PHP PI? PL?

PNG PRC QLB QPW QTC RAR REG RMF RTF SCR SCT SH? SIS SMM SPL

SRF SX? SYS SWF TFT TLB TSP VBS VB? VVV VWP VXD URL UNP WIZ

WMF WMP WMV WP? WRL WRZ WS? X32 XML XRF XSL XTP XX? ZI? Z0M

ZL? ZZZ 00? 386 3GR {?? GZ? TD0 TGZ ??_ ACE ARC ARJ BZ? CAB

COM EXE ICE LZH NAP PPZ TAR TAZ TBZ ZIP Z?? DO? XL? CDR CSV

D?B DIF DQY GF? GIM GIX GMS GNA GW? ICS IQY MPP MPT MSG MSO

OLE OTM PDF POT PP? PWZ QQY RQY SKV SLK UUU VS? WBK WRI

Plus files with no extensions.
Those with the "?" are wildcards and means any char in that place.

For the *best* capability of detection, an "On Demand" scan should include ALL file types.

Thank you very much, David.

The problem of checking all the files during an On Demand Scan is the
time it takes. In my opinion, if the On Demand Scan takes too long to
perform (more than six hours, for example), the user tends to use it
very seldom, and if you can shorten significantly the time it takes
using a selective Scan, the user will use it more often.

Make it a selective "On Demand" scan where the likelyhood of an infector would be the
greatest.
