I have found that NAV and MVS load down the computer too much, that is why I
sue Panda Titanium 2004 antivirus on all of my computers.

The AVG advertisement masquerading as a certification can be turned
off simply by UNchecking a box in the program options.

Every time I see it, I think of ...

Do you mean the virus database definition for today was almost 3 MB?
Jeez...

Avast!'s updates are very small - incremental - and take only seconds
to download, even on dialup. A few KB each time (usually at least once
daily).

You can turn of part of the ad, but not it all. In my mind, a very small
penalty to pay for such a good product.

Depends on the update, sometimes there's a program update as well included.
I think you're getting a bit fanatical updating once a day.

I must say, I've *never* in 15 years been hit with a virus. Despite using
Outlook Express (mainly) for the last 5 years or so. I update every few
days.

Yes, Avast had a program update a couple of weeks ago. ISTM it was a
couple hundred kilobytes.

Fanatical? <g> No... the program looks for updates every four hours
while you are online.

Neither have I.

If you read mail in Plain Text, and disallow scripting in the IE
settings, you will be fine. Most people don't know this.

What do you do about the virus that was added to the db today?

And replying to your other post:

What do you mean? Unchecking the box for the ad sig is an all or
nothing, as I see you've done in these last couple of posts.

Last I checked, it was rather easy to turn off all the add. Of course,
there is a way around it if you're unable to turn it off all together,
and that's to not use their mail proxy e-mail scanner, since it's really
more of a waste if you're practicing safe hex and not clicking on
erroneous attackments.

I've tried panda before, and IMO, it's just as bloated. Plus, when will
they learn to encrypt their defs file so that other AV products won't
detect it as a virus or virus fragment?

Absolutely agree, and it's not hard to do, as your tips show.

An easy way to do this is to go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced, and tick
the box next to "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is
closed".

The issue is that most people don't know.

Alternative browsers are usually "locked town tight" by default without
any need for a hundred billion add-ons, helper applications, registry
tweaks, and a rain dance or a satanic mass.

Microsoft tries to insist that browsing with active scripting and ActiveX enabled is safe to do. They inflict this
upon the user by default settings in order to force the users to beta test this feature for them unawares. It has
been quite a long time and it is still unsafe. Most vulnerabilities in IE are related to this feature in some way.
