My daughter has a virus I think it is a rootkit is there takes for ever to log on to her computer. Is there a antivirus program that I can run at boot up that dosn't require internet access.

What makes you think it is a RootKit ?

Please define the actual symptoms, problems and other factors that make you conclude the
PC is infected.

What have you done to prevent an infection and/or remove any malware on it ?

http://findfiles.com/list.php?string=kav_rescue_2008.001.iso&size=8530...8&db=Mi

Above is effort to get you an .iso file of Kaspersky
rescue CD.
If it doesn't work, try a Google of:
kav_rescue_2008
the whole filename is kav_rescue_2008.001.iso
which you burn to a CD, then boot from the
CD.
Specifically if it will detect a rootkit, I don't know.
I do know it will perform a scan of your drive
with no internet connection, and no boot from
your C: drive. It is free. And it may be slightly
or somely out of date.

You could try this:
released/>

That's a Linux based boot CD by F-Secure. You can use it to scan an
infected PC. It allows you to add virus definitions via USB drive, so you
won't need internet connection while scanning. There's a "quick guide"
PDF inside the downloadable zip file, which explains how to download and
use the virus definitions to/from an USB drive.

Gabriela

PS: adjusting follow-up to alt.comp.anti-virus if you don't mind Smile

Thanks folks
There are 50 to sixty programs running in the task bar but I can not identify them been trying to run Norton Nss scan and Panda 2.0 scan they have been running for days Panda presently shows over 300 files infected running at 11 percent complete. Would the previous suggested be the way to go? There is a lot of files that I would like to perserve.

It wouldn't hurt to tell us what OS you are running on her machine.
You need to scan from SafeMode. see: http://tinyurl.com/aacos or
http://tinyurl.com/6ju4bx [short version] That way you won't have dozens of
applications on when you scan and you can pick just one AV
[antivirus/antimalware] application to scan with. It will speed up greatly.
Make all the difference.

If you know how, do what Gabriela suggested. I doubt that you do. If
scanning in safe mode doesn't do it, see a good technician. [ I also heard
of the Trinity Rescue CD, but I personally haven't used it, I think there's
a pretty big learning curve to Trinity] . Lipman's Multi AV is another
alternative similar, can be run in Safe Mode. Read the other posts, you will
find it in many of them.

While you are in Safe Mode, you might also try using System Restore to
restore to a point before the viruses were acquired.
http://tinyurl.com/5zx5cu In fact , it may be best to do this first, then do
the scanning, you would then have fewer infections to deal with when you
scan.
