Post subject: Can't install AVG - other problems too!
Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

I have a fairly new Vista Basic machine, and it recently acquired some
problems - shutting down unexpectedly, Windows Defender not starting,
and I'm not sure Norton Security started either. I uninstalled Norton
(or I tried to. Using program features, I tried to uninstall Norton,
and the progress bar slowly reached the end but then just stayed
there. No new screen saying the uninstall was successful appeared. I'm
in that state now.) I'm trying to install AVG Free, but after ignoring
the warning that another virus program is installed, I then get this
message explaining the failed install:

Local machine: prepared for the installation
Initialization:
Warning: Windows Firewall activity checking failed.
There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint
mapper. (1753)
Actions plan:
Error: Evaluating of the short file name failed for "C:
\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7\avgrssvc.exe".
Creating of the temporary folder "C:\Program Files\Grisoft
\AVG7\avgrssvc.exe" failed.
The system cannot find the file specified. (2) %PATH%
= "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7\avgrssvc.exe"

The last statement is correct: there is no avgrssvc.exe.

I tried downloading the AVG install file again, but I get the same
result.

So, what should I do? I want to scan the machine as a start to see
what's wrong. But I need a virus program to do that, and I can't
install AVG. What can I do the help AVG install?

First thing is to get rid of Norton completely.
Download the Norton Removal tool from Symantec site.

I used the Norton Removal tool, but I still couldn't install AVG. The
installation isn't creating avgrssvc.exe . I tried to install AVAST!,
but had a similar problem. I also tired Kasparsky and it didn't
install either. I did it's online scan and it stalled at 5% then at
4%. I tried to install Sophos Anti-Virus, but got these errror
messages:
Cannot create savxp\program files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus
\sav32cli.exe
Cannot create savxp\program files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus
\SAVAdminService.exe
Cannot create savxp\program files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\Module
Retargetable Folder\SavMain.exe
Cannot create savxp\program files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\Module
Retargetable Folder\SavProgress.exe

I think something is preventing an anti virus install program from
creating the main executable. I was able to install AdAware. I ran it,
and it didn't flag anything important. Also, I can't start Windows
Defender. Anybody have any idea what's going on?
I'm going to try to install Spybot Search and Destroy and then maybe
HijackThis. But I need help understanding this.

The machine was infected with
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2005-06121...130-99&
..
wintems.exe was one of the files I found. And the description of the
malware, that it prevents anti_virus software from runing, fits. I
can't seem to install any anti-virus program. I've hand deleted all
the files and registry entries related to the malware but I still
can't install any anti-virus software. I tried TrendMicro last. The
same problem develops: certain files can't be created.

Anybody have any ideas how I should proceed?

What about the FACT that you block access to reputable anti-malware
sites and tools via your HOST FILE UPDATE?

What about that automatic update you claim your app now has, how will
people be sure that you're not installing a backdoor into their systems?

And yet you are filled with such filth, have a dedicated PORNO site
where you direct people to, and you've been exposed many times are
pirating software or improperly hosting vendors apps....

What about all that Porn you expose kids to on your website?

You've not explained how a reputable person would do those things.

The malware stops processes that have to do with anti-malware
programs. None would install (I didn't try Remove It) and Windows
Defender wouldn't start. I kept trying to install different anti-
spyware programs, and finally found that Spybot installed. It flagged
several registry entries for three Trojans, but wouldn't delete them
because I was using the free version, which doesn't delete. I manually
deleted them. Then, I was able to install Bitdefender. It found two
more bad files in the Emule incomming folder. The infection occurred
when I was using emule to get a copy of Kleptomania.

Everything is OK now, and I even have a working copy of Kleptomania.

That malware will not prevent the installation of Remove-it. It will not
prevent Remove-it from running (that was why I suggested it). I don't what
version or where you got your Spybot from but it has always been free and
does not require payment to remove anything. Glad you got it all sorted out.

what does remove-it do that would be considered
greyware, other than modifying a hosts file that i could load

There has been a long running feud between me and my fellow MVP's who run
that site you quoted. If you look at that host file you will find my website
listed in there. He does not like me so he put me in there. I have my own
hosts file and his website is included in mine. I have been distributing my
hosts file now for a few years. I just recently added it as a feature in my
Remove-it malware removal tool. Remove-it, besides removing certain malware
which is it's main function, has several other features like giving you a
choice to update your hosts file, resetting your desktop configurations,
repairing IE, Cleaning malware related registry entries, repairing your
internet connections, rebuilding the tcp/ip stack configurations, and
anything else I wish to add to it. Current version is now at 16 in a few
weeks I will be releasing version 18 which has more features and will be
faster. It also will be available for download now that it will be non
functional if someone tries again to steal it. Remove-it is not greyware.

The "download" is free as advertised, but the app doesn't delete
unless you pay and register. Trying to "clean" takes you to
http://www.spywarebot.com/register.php
It's actually Spywarebot v 1.5 . I remember the old version was free
and *did* delete for free.
