I totally uninstalled each and every version......more than once (G). And
for the record, I have WinME.
Every 2 or 3 months, I give my

Don't think so, Steve. Do all the same maintenance you do, other than I am
cautious about the Registry cleaning......just use the old MS RegClean 4.1
unless I am looking for specific keys left behind by an uninstalled program.
I am also

Nope.....running all the same as you except for NAV....that would cause a
problem on WinME anyway. I use EZ Trust AV and have for some 5 years at
least.

Freezing.......lockups. He has XP and I assume SP2......I just have WinME.
But we are both having the same problem with other than version 1.03. Some
others on the MS WinME group have had the freezing and I see several
complaints on the Lavasoft Forum.
Quite frankly, IMHO Lavasoft put a *semi beta* out there in the race with
Spybot (G). Evidenced by the freezing problems with the two 1.04 versions.
Plus they are still providing defs for the old version 6.xxx
It isn't a problem tho. I will just stay with 1.03 till they sort the
problems out. Also.....I finally gave in and installed Firefox yesterday,
which seems quite good. If I could just get the blasted imported
bookmarks/favourites sorted out properly.
I will still use IE, but had heard so many good things re Firefox that I
decided to give it a try. So according to what they say, I shouldn't have a
problem with spyware. Not that I really ever do anyway.

Heather:
In another post, I mentioned that I am thinking about dumping NAV 2004
because it is such a resource hog. I used NAV 2002 for 2 years on a PC
running WinXP. Before that for 2 years, I used CA InoculateIT AV on a PC
running WinME. I am seriously thinking of going back to CA now EZ Trust AV.
Any comments on how the latest CA AV is in terms of 1) catching/stopping
viruses, 2) resources, and 3) how the new EZ Trust AV's new email scanning
feature is.
I would agree that Lavasoft but out a beta product with SE.
An finally, about Firefox, I have not used it, but I have been using Mozilla
since ver. 1.01 and I would NEVER go back to IE. I really like the tabbed
browsing, image size controls, and security controls. I highly recommend
that you give Mozilla or Firefix a try.

I have XP with SP2 and have had only one problem with v1.05. On one occasion my
PC rebooted partially through a scan. This didn't happen again when run after
the PC had booted up and hasn't occurred on subsequent scans.
The PC is normally on for about 18 hours each day and that is the only time it
has spontaneously rebooted that I am aware of. This PC does some strange
things though - I can hear the disk working and sometimes see the firewall and
modem lights flash and then hear disk activity without any indication what is
happening. I guess this is Windows updates and Norton SW updates running.
Full scans by NAV, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot have never report anything suspicious
other than tracking cookies (Ad-Aware) and the DSO exploit (Spybot).

Running out for Thanksgiving Dinner (Canadian here).....but a quick note and
will answer fully later. I switched to the freebie CA AV but didn't use
their version of ZA coz I have ZAPro.
I did use the latest pay version of EZ Trust, but I don't like email
scanning and turned it off.

Does your firewall, you do not mention its name, not produce a log file?
And if it does (it certainly ought to), have you never looked at that log
immediately after you have seen those modem lights flashing? There are lots
of background transactions passsing to and fro while you're online, e.g to
your ISP, all benign and necessary, but there can be others of course.

Hi Roy
The hardware firewall only lists dropped packets at its input which is useful to
see what is trying to spam me etc but no good for through traffic. The
firewall installed with XP SP2 is also operating - I had that logging for 3-4
weeks while I looked at what it did but it also didn't log through traffic in
any useful way.
Other activities would be checking for emails and news mail. That, and the
update checks, are all that I can think of that should be running.

I doubt that your hardware firewall (is this a router?) will stop or alert
you to outgoing traffic, the inbuilt one in XP certainly won't.
Have you tried another software firewall, in addition to your existing
defences, such as Kerio (my preference), Sygate or Zonealarm? All have free
versions and all, as far as I'm aware, will produce logs if you tell them
to. A quick Google will locate current sources for all of them.
Also, if you haven't already done so, try installing and running Spybot
Search & Destroy, after making sure you have downloaded the latest
definitions (2004-09-30). Remove anything in its report marked with a red
alert.
Good luck,
Cheers,
