I've been using AVG for a few months, downloading and applying the updates
every 2-3 days, and now have 65 of the .bin files in the \update directory.

Will I need these files again, or can I safely delete them.

You can safely delete all EXCEPT the most recent update.

It's not worth saving them. If you need to re-install, go get another copy
of AVG, which will have up-to-date defs. It's the only sensible way to go
about it.
