I was a previous user of both Norton and McAfee payware. I decided I was
really tired of the revenue generating yearly subscription, that plus
the fact that McAfee always seemed to operate *extremely* transparent to
the user... me. In other words, half the time I didn't know if it was
doing anything at all.

I have installed Avast free version and been very pleased with it. No
more yearly subscription fees. Occasionally I will run an online scan
with Norton or one of the others available as a check on Avast. From
what I understand Avast does not get along well with Sygate firewall.

I can understand the value of yearly subscriptions, however I think this
whole deal is mostly a ploy by the software vendors to even out their
revenue stream. Those vendors discovered early on that once someone
purchased a package that was it, no more revenue for a while... not only
that but some decided to "share" their purchased package.

I think the AV updates should be factored into the original cost of the
package and once you buy one you receive updates for say 5 years or
so... but that would defeat the purpose of flattening out the revenue
stream.

Ah well, I strayed from the original topic.

Found Avast to be better than AVG at detection and resource use, but others
may disagree. Run Avast on a Athlon 2000XP with WinXP, a PentiumMMX 233
with Win98SE, and a PentiumMMX-200 with Win98SE... Works better on the
lower machines than AVG did..

Just my view..

If you want a faultless antivirus system you need to look further than
software.
How about if your computer just worked the same today as it did yesterday.
read www.selu.co.uk if you believe have faith and buy one you will not be
dissapointed.
I have used one for 6 Months have had the odd virus not a problem just
restart pc virus gone.
No more updates trashing your pc.
Virus who cares just reboot.

Those are the two most often recommended. I've used AVG 6 and am now
using Avast 4.6. Avast's newsgroup scanning caused some error messages on
my computer. However, I turned that feature off and now everything is okay.

As you have not said free anti virus software I can recommend VET as
excellent software.

Not too expensive and a fine product with top support by phone, email
and internet.

If you want to have a look at it, click here:-
