Hi,
What do I get extra if I subscribe to the AVG pro in place of the free
one that I have?

Regards Ian.

Live support, and a clear conscience!
Also a 'free upgrade' to AVG7 which in my opinion at the moment is not
recommended.
(Let a few other people report the bugs first!)
But I think AVGPro 6 is great!

A clear conscience? How does that work? Have you been indoctrinated? Oh, I
see. I forgot to read the small print - "This product is free of charge; you
will however, have a guilty conscience unless your buy the retail version."

Email scanning is a big bonus for me. I'm really happy with AVG 7.

But you get e-mail scanning with the free version. So, aside from getting an
upgrade to AVG7, what is the difference in product, performance, features,
etc. between the free version of AVG and the pay-for-it version? Thanks to
any one who knows.

As a long-time user of AVG I'd like to report I've migrated to Avast (
www.avast.com ) and have found it to be quite a bit more sophisticated than
AVG without bogging down my system, and the Home Edition is completely free
(without any guilt associated with it!). From their website: "Home edition
is a full-featured antivirus package designed for home usage. Our company
offers Home Edition free of charge, since in our opinion, it is possible to
avoid global virus spreading by efficient prevention. However, many user are
not able or do not want to pay for antivirus software. "

I like the fact that there are 5 separate modules that you can turn on or
off based on how you use your system: Resident Scanner, Internet Mail, Web
Mail, P2P and Instant Messenger. It uses heuristic scanning of e-mail
attachments, and has a recovery database feature that AVG doesn't have as
far as I can tell. (This let's you cleanly repair files corrupted by a
virus infection.) They also use incremental definition updates so these are
quite small. The virus database and program updates can be fully automated
even if you are on dial-up.

I did several tests allowing mail containing several viruses to be
transmitted to my system and it caught them perfectly.

For free I'm quite impressed with Avast! and would recommend it. (I'm not a
shill!! promise Smile I just approve of their programming effort. After going
through Norton, McAfee, P-Cillin and AVG I think this is 'the one' for me.

Sadly, email scanning doesn't work for me as I use an IMAP mailbox.
Which OS are you using with AVG7 ?
Are you using any firewall such as Zone Alarm?
I had the impression that AVG7 didn't work well for me because I'm using
98SE and ZA.

I'm using POP3 and no software firewall. E-mail scanning works perfectly on
XP-Pro and Win ME machines.

I'm using Win XP, ZA Pro and everything works fine. AVG6 never scanned my
email either.

I use Windows 98SE, Kerio Personal Firewall, and Eudora. AVG 6 scans
my incoming and outgoing email and places a certification message on
it both ways, no problem. Haven't tried 7 since I'm using the free
version, so I don't know if it has a problem with S oir firewalls.

But I can't imagine a firewall would be a problem since AVG should be
intercepting the mail incoming or outgoing long before or after the
firewall sees it, if the firewall is installed at the proper low
level. Most firewalls today apparently circumvent the OS IP handling
process themselves in order to check packets before the OS IP layer
does.. Virus scanning is or should be a higher level operation than
firewalling which is at Level 3 of the OSI networking model. At Level
3, a virus isn't even in one piece yet, just IP packets.

Of course, there could be other resource conflicts involved between a
firewall or an OS and the anitvirus.

It does if you're on POP3 and you use AVG6Pro.

It must be '98 then.
I just made the decision to upgrade my notebook, so I'll upgrade to (7) when
that happens.

"a clear conscience"??

AVG free, is free. I don't use it because I don't like its user interface,
but do know its free.

I have used AVG free 6.0 for quite a while, and have been beaten up by
viruses. AVG free sux, IMO. I will never use it again. NOD32 trial
seems to be much better at 'snatching' email problems.
