I found a computer with a virus under several names. Who should I report it
to? Can anything be done about it? These sick bastards should be taught a
lesson...

You found a computer that is infected. Well, so what? Like that is
some big deal when there are thousands upon thousands of infected hosts
out there? Finding one is about a tremendous an achievement as finding
a snowflake in Alaska. So when we find YOU get infected, what do you
think we should do to YOU?

Why are all you computer geeks so full of rage... rage that you can not
possibly vent in the classic sense? Why must you blast those that you
seem to THINK are not as smart as you? A little self-loathing brought on
by a low self-esteem and inferiority complex so bad, you must lash out
at those you deem ignorant because they ask you questions... questions
that they seem to THINK you know. If you don't know the answer or if you
feel them so beneath you, ignore it and do not respond, dumbass. These
people count on geeks like you for answers that they obviously haven't
heard in any other forums. You might be their last hope. So before you
chide someone for being a little less informed than you, put yourself in
their place, and try to enjoy being a normal, well-adjusted human being,
instead of some introverted closet case that can not remotely begin to
interact with people outside your little cubby-hole of living or working
space and is not in love with their computer. Counting on your computer
to bring you joy and sexual satisfaction only exacerbates your problems.
Get out and go look at the sky. No ones and zeros out there, geek.

What rage? Giovanni was the one that wanted to attack someone for them
getting infected (he didn't say *he* was infected). By showing him that
the same action should be taken against him using his same logic, or
lack thereof, should show him to be more tolerant of others that are
unfortunate in getting infected. It WILL happen to him, especially with
his exhibited inexperience regarding viruses, so he shouldn't be so damn
pious thinking he should rightously go punishing someone else - because
his logic would then make him the target of that same unreasonable
retribution if and when he gets infected. I've been infected once back
about 6 years since using PCs beginning around 1984 and it got
quarantined immediately. About 8 years ago I discovered a zombie that
wasn't detected by any AV or other software and got to learn how to
detect and dissect it. So 20 years with one virus and one zombie aren't
bad but, according to Giovanni, I should be castrated. It happens. I
also see folks that get into a car accident and start attacking each
other physically as though the dents in the car bodies was equivalent to
raping their mate. It's just a car.

Giovanni makes it sound like, oooh, a computer has been infected so we
should all go attack it somehow. Gee, why not just tell that owner so
they clean up their machine, or is being polite considered out of style
nowadays? Someone drops their wallet on the ground, so what do you do?
Tell them, steal it, or let it go and let them lose it to someone later
that picks it up and might not return it.

Giovanni wanted to somehow attack the "sick bastards" and as such
implied that he wanted to somehow attack the infected computer or the
author of the virus. He didn't imply he wanted to fix the problem or
alert the computer owner, and going after virus authors is not a one-man
job and generally a waste of your time unless you don't value it at all.
He wasn't clear which he wanted to attack. Could be he wanted to know
how to report a virus that his AV software did not detect so it could
get updated, but it sure doesn't look like what he asked.

Some guy sees a snowflake fall and starts running around in circles
screaming that the ice age cometh and society will fall and ad nauseum
with more pandemonium. The rest of don't care or act rationally since
we expect a flake now and then (in more than one sense).

As far as the commentary on the analysis of computer users, those
claiming they know the personalities of whom they lambast are usually
using themselves as the template for that argument. Stop berating
yourself. Unless there is a particular juicy tidbit that I want to
research, going through 42 newsgroups doesn't take very long. Stop
watching the boob tube and you'll have LOTS of spare time.

I didn't want to 'fan the flame' and accepted that there exists gross
ignorance in this world comparable to mine regarding computers. Ali was
correct in interpreting the appeal of someone who wanted genuine assistance.
Thats'all!

Ali was also correct in his assessment of the 'geeks' seeking this type of
'behind the scenes' sexual satisfaction... The display of this type of
self-righteousness confirms that these are individuals who, if moving about
naked and blindfolded in a dark room and with a Hard On, the first thing
that hits a wall is their nose. "_Vanguard_" chose to assume that he
understood the question, gave an answer that would portray him as 'above
all', and move on to prove his prowess with another 'victim'.

Perhaps I wasn't very clear in my expression, as I probably am not now. Is
this a crime? However, I believe that what I saw is! I saw someone
stockpiling weapons (viruses) for the purpose of attacking computer users.
Possibly including people in this forum. He/she did not answer any of my
messages and I wanted to find out if I could do something to help myself and
others ("...he shouldn't be so damn pious..." to stamp out this type of
crime.

I saw the weapons, I did not get attacked.

Season's Greetings to all, anyway. - Giovanni.

Oh please. Give it up.

In a sense, it can be. You were in fact so unclear that it not at all
surprising you got your ass flamed.

>However, I believe that what I saw is! I saw someone stockpiling
>weapons (viruses) for the purpose of attacking computer users.

Now you see, THAT is what wasn't at all clear.

It read like you found a "virus" infecting someone's PC, and reacted
as if you'd never seen a "virus" before - that you felt the user
should be reported to some sort of authorities, etc. etc. If someone
hadn't already flamed your ass, I'd have. Why, I'll clarify later.

On what basis did you conclude this user was "stockpiling weapons"?
Considering the wrath you seem intent on calling down, your post is
remarkably light on detail that could justify that wrath.

There's no crime in not having a clue about malware, how it works,
etc. unless you start calling for action to be taken against users for
situations you don't seem to understand.

>He/she did not answer any of my messages

Why do you think he/she is obliged to?

Apologies to Vanguard - in my last post in this thread, I mis-read the
attributions and thought you were the original poster and Giovanni was
the respondent. It was your reply I referred to as "Giovanni's".

>> > Why are all you computer geeks so full of rage... rage that you can
>> > not possibly vent in the classic sense?

This forum is the home turf of rather geeky folks, and we have our own
cultural norms that we defefend as vigorously as you defend yours.
Perhaps it's important to you that one can wear noserings and tattoos
and not be refused service, or that you aren't automatically
discriminated against on gender/orientation/ethnicicity basis.

Fair enough; I'd say most of us would support that, too. But there
are freedom issues within geekery that we strive to defend; you may
not understand them, but you may find they are more relevant to you
than you expected - especially if these freedoms are lost.

One of these freedoms is the free Internet; i.e. that the Internet is
not policed by some Big Authority Figure, who imposes some sort of
party line. It's the first opportunity "the masses" have, to interact
globally, out of reach of whatever strictures thier particular
location would seek to impose. We don't want to see the 'net become
subject to corporate or 1st-world hegemony.

So consider that background, when we react to some twit who wants to
call The Authorities because (as he initially presented his case) he
found a few "viruses" on somebody's computer.

Ali,

Amen to that! And thank you for putting Vanguard in his place. I was just
remembering how ten years ago, my total computer knowledge consisted of one
book: "Windows 3.1 for Dummies". That was it. But thanks to many patient
and caring people answering my questions on newsgroups, I now know a lot
about computers. Since then, each day, I try to return the favor by sharing
my knowledge with newbies. That's one of the strengths of the net--people
helping people.

Happy New Year!
