I don't see what this has to do with AV programs, but here's a work around.

Most Windows applications can be set to save to a default folder of your
choice (ie, not My Documents, My Music, etc.) You have to create the
folder first. This doesn't do exactly what you want, but it does
guarantee that that application's data files will be where you want
them, and that nothing else will be there.

If the application doesn't allow specifying a default Save folder of
your choice, dump it.

As a general rule, it's worthwhile to design a folder tree for each
application, and/or for each user. The root folder can be the default,
then Save As will take you to a subfolder in just a couple of clicks.

I could rant about the asininity of My Documents and such, but I'll
spare you. Instead I recommend that you enjoy your favourite soothing
beverage.

I have tried to do this with Outlook Express. When I look at a forum
message and go to save it, it always wants to save to My Documents. I want
it to save to My Forums, but there seems to be no option to change the save
destination. I don't really want to dump OE as it's my only newsreader.

Firstly, don't Save, but Save As. Then you should be able to select the
folder in which to save the article (you can also rename it, if you
wish, and select the format.

I use Thunderbird. It's free, and you can Save As articles in any folder
on your drives (even on a removable drive, such as a USB memory stick).
You can also Save to a folder within Thunderbird. Two drawbacks: it
doesn't assemble multi-part articles, and it cannot decode all varieties
of yEnc 9and (there are many.) But it's also a very good e-mail client.

But that's my point: I shouldn't need to select a folder, I don't want to
go to the default group folder My Documents. When I do a Save As from
Outlook Express it should go immediately to My Forums and let me save in a
folder (or no folder) there.

I use a little utility called PrintKey for screen dumps, and when I go to
Save As a screen dump, it immediately goes to the My Print Screens folder,
it doesn't go to My Documents as a default and make me change my selection
from there.

I use IrfanView, and when I do a Save As, it always saves to the folder I
last saved in with IrfanView, it doesn't save in My Documents as a default.

I am thinking of your statement that, "If an application doesn't allow
specifying a default folder of your choice, dump it."

But OE is a big-time application, why doesn't it accommodate this simple
request?

Well, there's a difference between Save and Save As. Save always saves
to a program-specified location, and/or in a program-specified format,
sometimes even with a program-generated file name. (Good programs allow
you change all these via the Option or Preferences menu.)

Save As is designed to override the default behaviour, which it does by
offering you the choice of any or all of alternate location, format, and
file name. OE should do so - if it doesn't then that's a design flaw.
(It's been a long time since I used OE, so I don;'t know what
does/doesn't do now.)

Well, that's because the utility has created that folder, and made it
its default. It may not even have a way of changing the default to some
other folder.

OE is not a big-time application. It's one of the "free" programs
included with Windows. It has never been better than average, and
sometimes worse. There are many better 3rd party alternatives, including
some free ones. The reason OE doesn't accommodate your simple desire is
that Microsoft designed it that way.

No problem, Windows is loaded with such little frustrations. So are
other operating systems, but don't let the Linux boys hear you say that.

I agree, OE should "stick" to the last folder saved. That's pretty well
industry-standard practice, now.

So when you next "Save As", pick My Documents for the location. Then it
will come up the *next* time you save one...

...though I would store images somewhere else, perhaps in a directory
tree grouped by category, or date, or similar structure. If you put
everything you have in My Documents, sooner rather than later you will
have a list too huge to be practical.

Thanks for your advice re Thunderbird, I've been thinking of trying it and
this may be the impetus to do just that.

Whoops, a little misunderstanding here: I am *pleased* that IrfanView
doesn't save to My Documents, as I don't want it to do that, I want it to
save to where I last told it to save to, which it does. My original problem
was that OE does not use the folder "My Forums" (that I created myself) as
the default I want it to use, and Wolf pointed out that it's probably not
possible to get OE to do this.

You're right about having a structure, though. I have all my own stuff on a
separate hard drive from the operating system and programs, and sort it into
various folders: downloads (software and updates), images (for my digicam,
with subfolders of grouped files), emails, forums, documents, screen dumps,
websites I want to save, and my own websites. Plus a folder with 60-odd
subfolders for miscellaneous file extensions when I come across them, e.g.
..psp, .mp3, .avi, .ico, .dll and so on.
