Post subject: sending a file to f-prot
Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

Hi,

I'd like to send a large file to f-prot for their analysis. It takes
too long as an email attachment. I've tried to find an ftp address to
use, but cannot find one. Does anyone know of an f-prot ftp address
that can be used for this purpose.

A related point:
I have an pdf file that crashes f-prot. What reasons could there be for
this crashing? The programme simply stops scanning?
Thanks

S

ps. I use f-prot for dos under windows98se

Right, that's why I need to send them the file. They asked me to send
them a copy, but didn't tell me how to forward the file. I have asked
them for advice, but have yet to hear from them?

I once tried to send them a file that was infected. Their reply
was that it was a "trojan horse" not a virus, so they refused
to do anything about it. I've since quit using F-Prot and am
now using AVG. Much better IMO.

LOL!

Not laughing at you - it just seems that judging an AV by how well it
detects trojans is a little like judging cars by how well they float.
That is not to say floating can't be a good feature for a car.

I sent them a large file, and they just told me that it slowed their
scanner because it was large and that they were updating their
antivirus engine. I still don't know why it stopped my scanner

Yes; we have come to expect different things from an av.

I expect an av to detect all traditional (i.e. non-commercial)
malware, be they trojans, worms or viruses. After all, some detect
keygens and other tools the user may actually want; they really should
detect off-the-peg software stealthed in that the user doesn't want.

When it comes to post-penetration scanning, I expect a formal av (e.g.
F-Prot for DOS) to detect every malware that may be unsafe or
impossible to detect from within Windows. And yes, I find F-Prot for
DOS still misses some non-commercial RATs to this day, and though they
improved thier reporting, F-Prot still uses generic descriptions
rather than specific names for many of the trojans it does detect.

Commercial malware is another matter; traditional av can be expected
to be weak on this, and though some are improving, I'd still use
AdAware, Spybot and HiJackThis for these. A problem with relying on a
single tool for commercial malware, is that the scanner may be
compelled to drop detection of a particular cm due to legal pressure.

Run F-PROT for DOS from CD? - Can I run F-PROT for DOS from a CD? ISTR that F-PROT for DOS filled 2 diskettes and probably now needs 3 diskettes. So I would prefer to burn a CD and run it from there. Does anyone know if this works?

F-Prot for Dos on XP - Hi, please forgive a possibly stupid Question. Before switching to WinXP I just got used to F-Prot for Dos. I think it's usefull to scan now and then before starting the OS. Now with WinXP I do miss this opportunity. Installing Win 98 just for F-Prot....

F-PROT for DOS - how to run it on W2K and WXP? - It's easy in my Win98SE because I can reboot to DOS. I believe W2K has that ability, too? If so, then I can recommend it to W2K users. But what about XP? How does one get F-PROT for DOS to work in that OS? Thank you!
