Post subject: When exiting Outlook Symantec scans sent messages when no email was sent
Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

I noticed recently when I exit Outlook a Symantec window pops up near
the task bar indicating that a 'sent' message is being scanned. The
problem is I did not send any outbound email. The last time I saw this
Symantec window I pulled the network cable out of the computer before
the message could be sent. Another window appeared saying that I lost
my network connection and my email to ann.DeleteThis@netscape.com was not sent.
There are never any messages in my sent mail or draft folders. It
appears that this is some form of a mail virus but the computer scans
clean with both Symantec and Trend Micro's Office Scan. I have browsed
the registry for any trojans highlighted on Symantec's web site but
nothing looks suspicious. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,
Joe

Hi Joe,

Have you tried coming up in "Safe Mode" and running Norton's from
there. Sometimes the anti-virus program can't see a virus that is
"running" in memory. Also, check to be sure your anti-virus data
file(s) are up to date.

Good luck.

He might also try booting up from rescue disks and scanning from them.
Assuming that there are no viruses on the disks, it will load a clean
operating system and it should be immune from any viruses resident in
memory.

I check my system with rescue disks weekly, just in case. (And I make new
rescue disks whenever I receive a virus signature update--the disks aren't
much good if they are using out of date virus information).

Jeremy and Nina,
Two great suggestions (safe mode & rescue disks), it takes about eight
hours to do a Norton scan on this computer so I'll have to block out
some time this weekend and give it a try.

Thanks,
Joe

Did you look in your sent folder to see if strange mail is going out? Just a
suggestion.

There is never anything in the sent or draft email folders. This
appears to be an inbound email that has the outbound email embedded in
it. It's also random and does not happen every time I read my mail.
There were no occurences this weekend. There is no way of me knowing
which message might be causing the problem. I have recieved
'Undeliverable Mail', which I did not send, returned to my inbox. I
think this is a fairly normal event from spammers that use anonymous
remailers. In my case all of the returned email had attachments titled
'Superior Profits - Digital Publishing'.

Thanks for your interest in my problem,

Joe
