Version 6.2.x of EZ-Antivirus [which is in beta and likely will be released
soon I understand] does support inbound email POP3 scanning.
Coincidentally, I just tested that feature this morning and it works very
nicely - a popup window appears as soon as the email is received (NOT when
you attempt to open the item). It also appears to replace the virulent
attachment with a txt file outlining the results of the virus detection.

Not bi-directional but accoding to the help file it does the following:

eTrust EZ Antivirus's Real-Time protection checks and cleans any infected
e-mail attachments when you open them.

Thanks for the RE: I too have gotten a few viruses using NAV but none when
I used InoculateIT or eTrust EZ Antivirus which is why I am considering
going back. I do like the 'screening while it is downloading' of NAV which
eTrust EZ Antivirus does not have. I have a rule to highlight all messages
with attachments so that I do not easily open them.

I'm not sure I'm following you guys. The original post could have been
witten by me, same scenerio. I only ever saw one virus attempt that I know
of but Eztrust warned during the email download. Forget name of virus.
When my new machine with Norton installed caught the Swen virus, out of
curiosity I used a duplicate partition to delete Norton, installed Eztrust,
updated (my registration is still good) and tested dowload of Swen. Eztrust
detected it. So I have to assume it does check download of attachments
(wouldn't be very useful if it did not). I registerd Norton, but might
eventually switch back to Eztrust.

The current version of EZ-av only checks an email attachment WHEN you open
it or attempt to save it (via 'right-click', 'save as' for example). The
upcoming version (6.2.x) actually hooks into your email processing to check
attachments when the email message is received and will automatically
scan attachments whether or not you decide to open the mail message or not.
That is the difference (6.2 is more proactive in that regard).

Now, some folks might prefer not to leap on attachments unless they
specifically open or save the file (saving the file implies 'opening' it to
read it) since there is a chance that EZ-av might generate a false positive
and thereby deprive you of access to the attachment. On the other hand, it
could be argued that automaticaly scanning incoming mail (and soon: outgoing
too) might be considered a proactive approach especially suitable for the
naive user. To each their own.

I think this is the difference between the two responses...

Thanks for the info on the upcoming version. I prefer to check out any
viral attachment myself......so you are right there. Mailwasher alerts
me to a possible viral attachment as it is. I get so damn much spam now
that I am using it all the time. Which royally ticks me off......why
should we be captive to these a$$holes that send spam and
porn.......rhetorical question, I guess!!

FWIW.....I got a Paypal request for my private information 2 days ago.
With an attachment. Said to open the attachment to re-send my personal
information. (is the word 'dummy' written on my forehead, grin??).

I put it into Spamcop.....which told me it was a virus. So, as I use
WinME and don't want EZ Trust to throw the virus into my System Restore,
I emailed it to both my Hotmail and Yahoo account in order to verify it.
Hotmail's McAfee did NOT react to it......said it wasn't a virus. Yahoo
got it immediately.......the virus was 'Mimail'.

So be careful with Hotmail.......their antivirus checking is the pits!!
