Archived from groups: alt>comp>anti-virus (more info?)

I currently use AVG Free 7.0.

I want to d/l another AV product to scan my computer (say Avist or Norton).

I don't want to have both of them running at the same time.

I don't see any menu item that will allow me to disable AVG.

Is there a way??

One way I see is maybe to uncheck AVG via the start tab of msconfig. and
then reboot and then d/l Avist. But is that the only way? I am hesitant to
leave my computer "unprotected" while d/l Avist.

Suggestions?

Yes......download Avast UNOPENED....as in SAVE...and save it to a folder you
can create called *Downloads*.....or some such. This has an advantage that
I like. Say I download Avast and it doesn't like my computer....then I will
still have the older AV program in My Downloads folder to reactivate.

Then go to Start/Run/Settings/Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove.

That should have most of your programs listed and find AVG and highlight it
and click on Remove......it will then be gone. You should also go into
Windows Explorer (Start/Run/Accessories/WindowsExplorer), find the Program
Folder for it (if it is still there) and delete it.

If I have skipped anything, or if you have questions, just ask.

Cheers.....Heather

After thorough removal of AVG, go to that folder where you saved Avast and
double click on it to open it. I knew I forgot something, grin.

Heather:

I want to keep both of them, with one being "active." I can then scan with
one and then scan with the other if so desired.

Sorry MB.......I missed your inference to have both of them on your
computer. I use F-Prot as a manual backup.....have you thought of that one?
Been using it for some 8 years or so. It catches some things that others
don't.

Cheers....Heather

MB:

I have AVG installed on several systems as a 2nd scanner, all you have to do
is when your installing AVG 7 make sure you choose custom installation and
choose not to have (uncheck them) the following components:

Resident Shield
E-mail Scanner
Plugin for Office

Then after installed and machine rebooted, if your running Windows XP go to
your services (Start, Run, services.msc) and set the AVG7 Alert Manager
service to manual, but leave the AVG7 Update Service automatic if it is by
default, this way it keeps up to date even though the real time scanner
component is disabled.

Disable Resident Shield: In Control Panel, un-check all boxes on
Resident Shield Properties tab. In Control Panel Resident Shield
should now say "Resident Shield is loaded and not fully functional."

Disable e-mail scanning: For each installed plugin, click "Configure",
then un-check boxes for "Check incoming mail" and "Check outgoing
mail." Or try clicking "Disable Plugin", but I've found that to not
always be available or to work.

It may also be a good idea to disable/cancel all scheduled automatic
updates and tests: In Control Center go to "Scheduler", "Scheduled
Tasks."

If you want to disable boot scan: In Autoexec.bat un-check box (with
msconfig) next to "C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE~1\BOOTUP.EXE". To stop
AVG loading at start up un-check AVG entries in msconfig Startup tab.

You should now be able to install Avast with no potential conflicts
with AVG.

I normally run AVG with all the above, except e-mail scanning,
disabled, using it only as an on-demand scanner, which is all I have
use for really. HTH.
