Warning. BartPE will write to your MBR, and possilby trash
your system. I suppose it may work if you only use it on the
system you create it on, but I wouldn't trust it even then.
If you must, then see if you can configure your BIOS to
block writes to the MBR.

He booted a win98 box (with a fat32 hard disk) from bartpe then ran
the xp chkdsk utility with a switch telling it to automatically fix
all errors. Apparently, bartpe failed to read the partition table
section of this hard disk's master boot record correctly and thought
it contained a single ntfs partition. Either that or bart somehow
incorrectly altered the partition table. Consequently, his fat32 hard
disk got trashed and bart got the blame.

Err, what? My machine is still running fine after creating *two* CDroms
with different BartPE versions.

Uh oh, bad move. In such a case, i would have done a FDISK /mbr, which
might have fixed the thing. If not, there are still tools like the
Ranish Partition Manager, yet it will require some knowledge.

Still I wonder why the BartPE disk botched it. FAT32 is available for
NT versions, too, and shouldn't have been changed by an XP prog.

fdisk /mbr would only overwrite the "program" part of the master boot
record (if it somehow got corrupted). The partition table part would
be unaffected.

I wonder why too. I think the partition table probably got
changed/corrupted by some action not yet posted about and Bart is
probably the whipping boy, carrying the can for something else the OP
shouldn't have done.

I don't remember exactly how I created my BartPE
CD. I do recall it was from instructions and software either from the
author's site or an 'official'
site.
I booted BPE on my win98SE system. I went to
DOS prompt, and my directories were there, but
all my files were unaccessable. I quickly booted
to Win98SE and my files were all missing, the directories were there.
After much effort, I ended up fdisking the partition.
That didn't work, win98se fdisk said something like
'partition unlocked' and wouldn't delete the partition.
I used PowerMax to low level format the HD. Now
I could fdisk it and re-install win98SE from Dell CD.
I took the BPE CD and booted a win98SE system
that allowed 'virus prevention' of the MBR in the BIOS. The BPE disk tried
to write to my MBR.
It could be a bad BPE disk, but I'm sure it wasn't
an image I got somewhere and burnt it, it was an
origainal burn using the author's tools on my winXP
laptop.

FC - just tried to followup your suggestion, and in trying to find how to
download it (couldn't locate any download links on the site itself), came
across the following

http://www.morgud.com/reviews/software/The-911-Rescue-CD.asp

See the warning at the bottom. Have you used it yourself?

I've used The Ultimate Boot CD for Windows many times and recommend it.
Lots of good docs, too. UBCD uses Bart PE and provides add-ons for
managing a sick PC. You can also put your own software on the CD.

snip snip snip
I reviewed my original posts here.
I said my computer would boot and my files
were missing after the BPE boot.
That's not what happened.
After the BPE boot, and I couldn't access
my files using BPE, I tried to re-boot win98SE.
It wouldn't boot.
Gave a 'There is no OS' message and quit. So
BPE had written a XP type record to the MBR.
I then booted from a Win98SE startup floppy.
I couldn't access the C: drive.
I suppose at that point I did a fdisk /mbr, but
I don't remember.
My points are:
BPE wrote to my MBR, trashing my hard disk.
I was able to get back to seeing files, probably
by an 'update' win98SE CD, but my long filenames
were gone.
It was a mess and I eventually had to low level
format the HD, re-install the aged win98SE from
OEM CD, then update win98SE and re-install
everything from backups.
