Post subject: Question
Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

Hi all, I lurk here but read everything. Anyway, I have a question. I have
done many virus scans and my computer doesn't have any of the virus problems
that are going around. Although I too am getting a ton of the fake Microsoft
etc emails, I have set my filters and none of them are actually getting into
my inbox. But, I have a question. In the last few days, I haven't been able
to access any web search sites...not Google, Altavista, Ask, none of them!
Can anyone tell me why this is? I have seen a post or two about this either
on this group or others, can't remember now, because when I saw those posts
I wasn't having this problem! Help anyone...I use Google alot and I miss
it!! TIA!
Nancy

Nancy, you should be able to get google. I have not had any problems
accessing it.
I presume you typed in www.google.com in the address line of your browser?
My suggestion is to contact your ISP support to find out why you can't get
it. They might be able to give you some ideas. Good that your filters are
working for you. Since I set up Mailwasher Rules, I have been getting less
than before as well.

that.

It sounds like what she has is a trojan and it affects all or at least many
of the search engines. It is loaded on the machine by way of a pop up that
came in a spam, and is known as Qhosts-1 and sometimes Delude. The trojan
then downloads a program called Partyboy.exe and that is probably what is
blocking access to the search engines.

If this is true she needs to change her hosts file. In Windows XP, it can be
found at:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\Hosts.

Or in Windows 2000, it's at: C:Winnt\System32\drivers\etc\Hosts
If you are using Windows 98 or ME, probably C:\Windows\Hosts.

Open the Hosts file with Notepad and delete any references to Google
or any other search engine, along with the IP address 64.191.95.139.
Save the file. If Notepad gives the Hosts file an extension of .txt,
go into Windows Explorer and change it. It should be just plain Hosts with
no extension.

Run an updated virus scanner and run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy
to find and delete any files associated with the trojan.
