Does anyone know if AVG deals with dangers arising through instant messaging
services like ICQ and MSN? I've looked at the Grisoft website and can't
fnd any mention of this whereas other packages (including Norton are
explicit that they do).

TIA

Why don't you ask Grisoft?

What can you get through IM, unless you transfer a file?

If you get an infected file, AVG will alert you, usually as soon as it
hits your HD, and certainly if you try to open it. No different from any
other credible AV proggie.

So I'd assume, but an Internet Security Programme is more than just an AV
prog. I'd expect it to check and block specified information from leaving
the PC.

A Norton update a couple of years back claimed that their new version could
now deal with instant messaging, so I guess it couldn't before. So I
deduce that perhaps not all IS programs can handle IM. Soooo..when
considering a new package I look for a statement that they can.

Note that Norton only claim to be compatible with aol 5.1 +, msn 6.0+, and
windows messenger.4.0+

Thank you. Of course I did. They just gave me their sales literature
which, see above, is silent on the
matter. Hence my asking here.

Oh, I thought you were only talking about the AVG antivirus product.
I don't know about their other products that contain firewall also.
