I've updated my VirusScan automatically daily for years, including the
occasional major revision. Now suddenly today on clicking the "update
now" button I'm informed I have to download the "download manager" -
and just when I think I've done so, I find myself faced with another
18mb download at an incredibly low data transfer rate.
I am, by the way, on dialup . . . you may quit laughing now . . . .
Is this McAfee's new world, or have I been kicked into limbo by
mistake?

That's putting it mildly. 18 to 21mb, apparently depending on what you
choose to install, downloading at anything from 3 to 5k per second.
And no pointers given. They are offering to install VirusScan,
Firewall - both of which I have - and something called "Site Advisor"
that I've never heard of. All this in order to update VirusScan, which
is the only thing that I've been given an update notification for.
I've been through several updates requiring reboot before - but never
anything like this.
If you or anybody have any advice, or can point me to any, I'd be most
grateful. I've had no success accessing the McAfee chat line.
Thanks

Perhaps you can piecemeal the downloads, for a little less pain.

Vs11 includes firewall and siteadvisor. You can choose not to install
firewall or siteadvisor up to you. The firewall has a couple bugs as has
VS11. You cabn see what is happening here
http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewforum.php?f=99
site advisor isnt bad it gives you an indication as whether a site u are
visiting has a history of spyware etc issues.
Both vs11 and firewall8 have new features but with new programs u get more
bulk and memory used. Really up to you whether you update i did though I am
on cable and moderate for the above forums. >> Stay informed about: Anybody had to deal with McAfee's new Download Manager? |

I am grateful to both you and Mr. Lopshire. It's doubtful I'd ever
have stumbled on much or any of this information on my own.
So I reckon I'll go ahead and download the new stuff, but perhaps wait
until the wee hours in the hope of a faster data transfer rate.
In the meantime, though, shame on McAfee for not being a bit more
informative and allowing some sort of bypass when doing the regular
virus definition update.
Thanks again.

It was fine until i detected every site i visited was being sent back
to mcafee through siteadvisor, such underhand dealings totally blinged
me off hence a rapid removal. >> Stay informed about: Anybody had to deal with McAfee's new Download Manager? |

As far as I know SA checks a datbase at the SA site to see if the site you
are accessing is green yellow red type etc. there is no polling or keeping
of who is going where.
I am confirming this I gatjer it works off a database on site rather than
upadted dat files or equivalent. >> Stay informed about: Anybody had to deal with McAfee's new Download Manager? |
