I have been getting error message that says "Avast will not be able to
protect outgoing mail (SMTP Protocol). Error 10050". I also get the
same message for POP3, etc... How can I correct this? Does this mean
avast is not working? I have removed and installed avast again, but I
keep getting the same problem.

FWIW, no application can protect outgoing mail. That is why most
people consider scanning outgoing mail to be somewhere between
pointless and foolish. Attaching your AV's spam to the message stating
that it has been scanned only reflects such foolishness, and in no way
indicates that the message is indeed safe. The only things worth
scanning WRT email/NG messages are attachments before opening. Just my
0.02.
