No. There is no such thing as a single "The best" antivirus. And the
possible candidates depend on your needs, which you've neglected to share
with us.

Yup. I'm also thinking of deployment scenario - the best scanner engine in
the world is no help if you've got the single user desktop version and were
hoping to scan an exchange server mailstore with it, or vice versa.

I'd like to point out two "discoveries" that I've made in the last 8-10
months: NOD32 and ETrust EZ. I dropped a "big name" antivirus last November
for NOD 32. VERY impressed. This antivirus was much lighter on my old
Win98 system and has a higher "detection rate" in independent testing if you
believe in that sort of thing. Then NOD upgraded to version 2 and I had to
drop my dependable version 1 because they are going to discontinue virus
definition or dat updates; but they did not charge any version 1 user a dime
for the upgrade (hear that Norton?). Unfortunately, version 2 gave my old
pc indigestion so I had to look for another program. Upon reading a couple
of good reviews I decided to try ETrust EZ Antivirus. Again, VERY
impressed. This program was actually lighter that NOD and EVERYTHING on my
pc speeded up even more. Etrust EZ is also only $20 and less than a 4MB
download. However Etrust does not scan incoming email like NOD did. That
is not a concern for me since my ISP scans my email using Norton and I have
even tested it by sending myself viruses; sure enough, they get removed
before coming into my inbox with a message from my ISP telling me what has
been removed. Within the next 10-12 months I plan on getting a brand,
spanking new pc and I will be hard put to decide between going back to NOD
or sticking with ETrust. I can highly recommend either one. Whatever your
decision, good luck.

Also recommend ETrust EZ AV and I was impressed with NOD 32 Version 2. As
far as email scanning, ETrust will catch and remove viruses if you try to
detach or open them.
