Post subject: norton anti virus 2002 sufficient protection?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

hi all,

please forgive me if i ask some silly questions i will try to explain myself
the best i can. i have the task of installing some anti virus software on 6
networked computers for a small business. norton antivirus 2002 is currently
on all computers but has recently expireed. i am wondering if renewing this
version and getting the latest 'live updates' would be sufficient to protect
against newest viri ie:w32.blaster.worm? my other question is is it right to
pay a $32au renewal fee per machine? or should it be payment for just one
computer? if i was to purchase norton antivirus 2003 would i have to
purchase 6 licences (1 per machine) or just the one? if just the one, then
how do i go about installing it on 6 different machines? again sorry for any
silly questions, i have never set up virus protection on networked machines.
i would have emailed symantec however could not find the option on their
site

any help would be greatly apprectiated

regards
-michael

Yes. Live Update definitions from Aug. 11 or later protect against
that worm.

Sorry, I don't know anything about network licensing.

Do all of the machines connect to the internet through a common connection?

You can renew the subscription service to get updated virus defs. Or you can
upgrade to the newer version, and that gives you another year of updates. In
your case you need to buy 6 of something. They have a network option, in
that case it is a minimum of 10.

Something to think about is that at some point they will no longer support
it, and you will have to move forward to a newer version anyway. That is why
you should also consider something different.

At this point you must renew what is expiring, or risk being affected by new
inventions. I'm sure their sales department wil be helpful if you decide to
stick with NAV.

Bullshit. I removed the worm from my computer, than scanned it with
fixblast.exe which i downloaded from symantec website, then i made
liveupdate(on august 12) for norton antivirus and scanned my computer
again - everything was clean. I have notron antivirus autoprotect always on,
but in a couple of hours my computer got infected again. only the patch for
WinXP helped.

The same variant?

No surprise really, how many new variants of this worm, or
new worms or other malware, do you suppose we can
expect to see now that every script kiddie knows about this
exploit and how widespread the vulnerability is? AV cannot
protect you from buffer overruns.
