McAfee Viruscan

I CANNOT UPDATE the product. Each time I reboot, the last checked date is
about 1½ years ago. When I Update now, I get a message stating that it
cannot update as long as other windows programs are running. The only
problem: no other programs are running.

Can this problem be fixed? If so, how?

PS I have WinXP Pro with S.P. 2

PPS The people at McAfee do not deign to give version numbers so I cannot
give any. Viruscan was bought 2004-2005.
