Steganos Internet Security

| Does anyone have + or - thoughts about the above? My Bit Defender runs

It is suggested to get Kaspsersky over the Steganos offering. Even the AOL AVS offering
(with the AOL toolbar NOT installed) is preferred.

There has been little or no feedback on Steganos where there is tremendoes feedback on
Kaspersky's offering via AOL. It is not the case of using the Engine and Signatures of
Kaspersky but a repackage of Kaspersky software.

AVS is KAV 6 MP0 (KAV 6.0.0.303 hotfix e) with an AOL skin. If you
install KAV 6 MP0 without the Web AV module and the PDM modules (AAA,
AIC, RG, OG), you have a KAV installation that is _identical_ to AVS
(without the toolbar, of course). AVS and KAV 6 MP0 _both_ use the same
engines, including heuristics, and signatures. Other than AOL's greenish
skin, there is _no_ difference.

Just don't install the AOL Security Toolbar. Most people consider it to
be spyware. And the email address that you give to AOL? I don't know.
They will use it, of course. That is how you get your AVS activation
code. Same as with every other software vendor in the world. Now whether
AOL sells lists of these addresses or not, your guess is as good as mine.

Trust me, the KL developers are too busy to strip down KAV, and then fix
all of the problems associated with doing that. There is _no_ AVS
support team, only KAV 5 & 6 (MP0, MP1, MP2) support. AOL's own software
still includes McAfee products. And so why did AOL pay KL to do this?
Obviously a marketing stunt. Beyond that, I really don't know.

I use KIS/KAV. If I did not, at this time, I would use AVS. You cannot
beat the price. And what the hell? Using a Windows box, I have already
made a pact with the devil anyway. [bg]

off. The Kaspersky is (AIUI) a cutdown version of their own program, no
heuristics. There was also criticism of AOL's attitude that they will
use email addresses.
I haven't tried it but the AOL screenshot looks pretty identical to the
Steganos IS I just installed. Which found something that none of the
others did. Two days and I'm liking it thus far. It doesn't slow my
system down while updating or scanning like Bit Defender now does.

You're right about lack of feedback re Steganos, I only found this
review. Even Amazon aren't selling it yet.

Well, I doubt that I would be able to exercise it to the level you might

It seems that AOL refuse to say if they would pass on addresses. Trouble
is, I can't find the page where I read this!

Thanks for that Ron. As I said earlier in the thread, I'm looking for an
Internet Security Suite, so I don't really need AOL AVS. In addition to
Steganos IS I'm trying Avast as an on-demand scanner. I was also going
to check out Kaspersky IS but it won't install unless I uninstal AVG,
Avast and Steganos and I can't be arsed right now!
I'll give it a few more days.

Just /typing/ AOL is enough risk. Not a security risk, but of a shower
of plastic discs.

(I need to search all the drawers and CD folders for the next week to
make sure there aren't any of their CD's mysteriously appearing -- How
do they do that, anyhow. Oh, yeah, also clean out the post office box so
there is still room for normal mail.)
