Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus, others (more info?)

I just added Super Antispyware free with its real time capability
on my wife's Win XP machine. It cohabitates (apparently) ok
with AOL AVS also set for realtime av scanning. I can easily go
to eicar.org to to check and see whether or not AVS blocks the
download of eicar.com. But I'm wondering if anyone knows of a
web site harboring some spyware/adware that Super antispyware
might alert on. My purpose is to do some simple verification
that both realtime scanners are "doing their thing" without
interfering with each other.

When did the free version of SAS start having real time protection? I don't
think it does. Try this site if you want to test your software. This site is
gentle just pop ups. If you want something real nasty just let me know.

Once installed it does, of course. But what's the purpose of the
antispyware realtime then? I found one test and one particular
purpose where it blocked a test malware from altering her
home page url. What other functions might it perform?

BTW, they do both seem to be "doing their thing" realtime as
near as I can tell from my limited testing.

I have in mind some harmless and easily removeable adware which the
antispyware should block during the installation. Maybe I'll fool
around trying to locate one, but probably I won't since I'm really
not interested enough in this garbage any more to waste my time with
it Smile She never has any malware problems, and after all, I'm prepared
to simply Restore her drive from backup if she gets hit with a
difficult-to-remove malware.

if the anti-spyware works by means of known-spyware scanning there's no
reason why it can't just use the eicar test file the same way anti-virus
products do... i don't know if any actually do so, but it's certainly a
design option for them...

for the ones that work more off behaviour and/or change detection there
is something called spycar (yes, it it's really called that and yes it's
a play on the word eicar, and coincidentally you'll want to go to
spycar.org just as you would go to eicar.org)... do a google search,
you'll find all sorts of interesting things (like an interview randy did
with one of the creators of spycar)...

Hey, that was kinda interesting, thanks. I used IE which many of the
tests require, and AOL AVS blocked every attempt except the last one
involving a change to the hosts file. Super antispyware didn't take
any actions, just AVS. But it appears based on a different test I
found that the antispyware is working realtime as well, as I had
said.

BTW, AVS is doing this on a signature basis ... it doesn't have the
extra protection modules included with KAV 6. In doing the tests,
I chose to Run the EXE files presented ... which AVS obviously has
sigs for ... it has special names for them which include the word
spycar.

There is NO test adware/spyware. Adware/spyware is more complex. It consists of many files
and many alterations to the PC.

What I am trying to day, do to the complexity of adware/spyware, there just isn't a "test"
file.

You can try a test sample of known adware/spyware but, it is NOT suggested. And we just
can't provide you with a live sample. I'm sure you understand that and why.

Nothing to cry about, you host PORN and FILTH on your website, the same
site where you tell people they can download the files you say will help
them - most people consider PORN sites to be a source of malware, yours
does not appear to be any different.

My bad. It does however seem to have some sort of limited "resident
protection" since it did serve to prevent a test site from altering
the default home page. It plainly put up a pop up message announcing
this.

On my own machines I disable super from starting up when Windows
boots, so that it doesn't place anything in memory and no icon appears
in the tray. On my wife's machine, I just let it "do its thing" and I
jumped to a false conclusion without checking that it has "real time"
caoability. Just how much "resident protection" it provides when
allowed to run at startup, I don't know. But there does appear to
be some limited capability.

True, found this in another ng:

"The Free Edition simply does not have real-time or scheduling. It
fully scans and removes the same as the Professional.
