Post subject: McAFEE Service STINKS!
Archived from groups: alt>comp>anti-virus, others (more info?)

A few years ago I dumped Norton/Symantec antivirus due to their poor support
service, and purchased McAfee VirusScan. Now it appears that was a mistake
too, as their service is if anything WORSE!
AVG antivirus at www.grisoft.com may be the next I try, because McAFEE IS
IMPOSSIBLE TO DEAL WITH! They obviously don't give a damn about customer
service, and only seek to sell new products rather than supporting the
products and services you have already paid for.

After ONE MONTH of back and forth e-mails to support RemoveThis @mcafeehelp.com, all I
have been getting is useless, incompetent "advice" and a complete
buck-passing runaround!

Here's the story, exactly as I explained it several times to McAfee:

I renewed my McAfee VirusScan update subscription last April, and it is
supposed
to run until 4/24/05.

A month ago I had a hard drive crash, and my new hard drive only has my
files
up to March 2004, as the backup I installed on the new hard drive was made
at that time. I resubscribed for VirusScan update service in April. Now I
am getting a popup window telling me my update subscription has EXPIRED,
and I cannot download updates. This is obviously because the resubscription
information in my software was lost when it was replaced with the backup
copy made in March, before the hard drive crash

My subscription runs to APRIL 24, 2005. I need to recover the updates lost
in the hard drive crash, and I should be able to continue receiving them
until this expiration date. Please correct this - let me know how to
correct my software and resume getting the service I PAID FOR.

WHY is it taking so long for McAfee to CORRECTLY tell me how to resolve
this issue and get My VirusScan and THE UPDATING SERVICE I PAID FOR working
again??
------------------
Last thing I received from McAfee was a buck-passing referral to the 800
number of Digital River, an associate of McAfee that supposedly would be
able to help me. Needless to say they could not, having no record of my
purchase!

McAfee is a product, marketed by Network Associates. Network Associates is
a company that buys up other peoples creations, then mass markets them for
profit, without having any clue how they work, or how to maintain them.

I've been using freeware AVG for well over a year. Op system is Win
Xp with the new SP2. No complaints... updates seem to be timely and
it contains most viruses that it finds. Those that it can't contain I
remove manually. Seems to have good compatibility with the new SP2
also as it worked from the start after the install.

We used to have McAffee at work. It used to be good and was
recommended by our Sys Admin. They had a free version that employees
could take home and install on their personal PC's. After the buyout
by N.A. the software went downhill quickly. I too remember it
crashing my system. I had enough and never went back.

Also tried Norton Anti-Virus (commercial subscription) back when I was
using Win98. I remember a bug-ridden difficult install (YMMV) and
having to rebuild a system or two because it could detect but not
eliminate a couple of particularly nasty Viruses. Maybe it works
great now with Xp - Don't know. As I said, I'm happy with AVG.

With quality free antivirus clients available for download that
have free, unlimited updates, who would spend money buying a
year's subscription for antivirus updates? Crazy. Do yourself a
favor, uninstall McCrappy and install AVG.
