I doubt that your hardware firewall (is this a router?) will stop or alert
you to outgoing traffic, the inbuilt one in XP certainly won't.
Have you tried another software firewall, in addition to your existing
defences, such as Kerio (my preference), Sygate or Zonealarm? All have free
versions and all, as far as I'm aware, will produce logs if you tell them
to. A quick Google will locate current sources for all of them.
Also, if you haven't already done so, try installing and running Spybot
Search & Destroy, after making sure you have downloaded the latest
definitions (2004-09-30). Remove anything in its report marked with a red
alert.
Good luck,
Cheers,

Hi Roy
The hardware firewall is both a router and a firewall.
I had considered installing a 2nd software firewall in parallel with the SP2
firewall but figured that this would be likely to cause problems - for instance
which one has precedence.
I have run full scans by NAV, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot, all up to date, and they
have never reported anything suspicious other than tracking cookies (Ad-Aware)
and the DSO exploit (Spybot).

Try installing a firewall which alerts, and blocks if desired, outgoing
calls, and which also produces a logfile, such as one of those already
suggested. You can simply turn off the XP one when the alternative is in
place, it can always be turned on again later. I've heard of people who
have left both running without ill effects, but I've not tried that myself.
