Post subject: Problems using internet, virus at fault?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

Uh, hi, I'm experiencing problems that I haven't had before with my
Acer Windows Vista notebook computer and I think a virus may be the
culprit.. The main one, and why I came here for help, is the computer
is not accepting my router (a belkin one, forget exact brand name )
like it did before...It will connect without any problem but then it
stops there, it won't load a page, it'll give me an error message like
DNS error (and say things like DNS can't find google)...For some
strange reason though this issue only seems to occur with this router,
I've tried connecting to other routers in my area through their wifi
signal, linksys and reddin brands, and they work without a problem (at
least, in that regard)...Anyway, that is the main one, but it also
seems like the computer is a bit "off" too, for example programs seem
to be taking much more time to load and close up, though this could be
due to having more programs than I did before...Now, I've tried using
two different virus scanning tools (Norton's built in one and Avast)
and nothing turned up except a "tracking cookie", which Norton called
a minor threat. I'm quite convinced though I have a virus of some kind
and I just haven't found the right scanning tool because this computer
was working as smoothly as any computer i've ever used...Well, if
anyone can help me out here, I'd greatly appreciate it, what I have
basically kills my enjoyment of using this computer...not to mention
I'm also afraid this will escalate into severe problem that will wreck
the computer like it did to one friend I knew who let it run
unchecked...

These two statements do not work well together.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure I follow you...The first statement is about
me finding it odd that only my router doesn't work (because if my
computer is infected I would think anything connected it wouldn't work
too) and the second is just me assuming my computer has a virus based
on the fact my router doesn't work...Those seem like statements that
support each other not contradict...but hey, feel free to prove me
wrong, sometimes I speak illogically due to lack of being able to
articulate well...

The only thing that doesn't work is this one particular piece of gear.
That's where the problem is. There's no reason at all to suspect a virus. Occam's razor.

It's died or lost some config settings. Try the factory reset procedure and then re-config it, see if it
works. If not, bin it.

Well, it seems like that it's a moot point after all, because my
computer is really acting up up right now, it's no longer just a
router issue any more. Here are some of the problems: the computer
freezing at start up screen, files not responding at random (internet
explorer did this three times, windows media player twice, a dvd
player program, once; and again all of this at random, I did nothing
to precipitate any of this like running too many things at the same
time), the computer's LCD suddenly going dim and staying that way (god
knows what caused this), programs taking a lot longer to shut
down...there are others too I can't think of at the moment, and then
there is also the internet connection problem from before (but that is
most likely a separate problem unrelated to my new problems)...I
haven't sat idly by let these problems escalate either, I've ran (as
one program at a time) various anti virus (avast, antivir) and anti
spyware programs (spybot and superantisspyware) as advised by people
who know more about this than I do.. I've even done a system restore
as it was recommended, and that did nothing either...My gut tells me
I've got a bad infection of some kind that I haven't found the right
anti virus program that would detect it yet ...I don't know if I
mentioned this before, but at one time I accidentally land on a site
that would be known to cause this kind of malfunctioning, a porn site,
just for a moment, and after that it all went downhill (I clicked back
as quickly as I could, though, I guess with a site like that just a
moment is all it takes ...Anyway, if you or anyone else could help
me, I'd be tremendously gratetful...this computer was actually given
to me as a very generous gift from my parents, few things would be
worse for me than tellling them I screwed up the gift they spent so
much time and money to get me by being so careless, that would be much
more upsetting than it would for me personally...

How about a complete restore from backup that
you have or did when you got the computer?
Boot to safe mode and format c:. You probably
don't have to re-partition the hard drive, maybe
there's a d: recovery drive that couples with the
backup cd(s). It is usually a F11 or something
at bootup time you hit.
