This one's causing me to scratch my head a lot, so any suggestions are
gratefully accepted.

A colleague has installed AVG 7 free edition on a Windows XP Home PC with a
standard dial-up connection to the internet (ClaraNet, if it's relevant).
Checking of outgoing mail has been disabled, and yet the following bounce
messages are coming back into her Outlook Express 6 inbox:

---------------
From: "AVG for Email" <avgmail@localhost>
To: <xxxx.TakeThisOut@clara.co.uk>
Sent: Friday, January 07, 2005 11:42 PM
Subject: Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender

This is the AVG E-mail Scanner program.
I'm sorry to have to inform you that the message returned
below could not be delivered to one or more destinations.
Cannot open smtp connection to '80.168.70.141'
Connect: A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host. (10065)
Your e-mail message is being returned to you in the next part of this
message. Try to send the message again.
Should you need assistance, please contact your administrator or your
internet service provider.
---------------

I'm at a loss to explain this. Can anyone make any suggestions as to what I
should try to fix the problem? I'd like, if at all possible, to retain
AVGAS on the machine, and I know that at a basic level it works properly, as
I have it running on my computer (XP Pro, ADSL).

TIA

Well that ruins my first suggestion - toss AVG like so many others have done
since v7 came out!! Is she using Mailwasher by any chance???

Try a custom install and don't install the EMS (E-Mail Scanner) - that is
the easy fix. It is the AVG EMS causing your problems. There are other
solutions described on the AVG forum - go to the Grisoft website and go to
the user forum (you don't need to register to read only).

Alternative - as so many other AVG users (including myself) have done -
switch to Avast or something else. I did so not just because of the
problems and changes in v7, but also because AVG started to become
unreliable, missing virus's that others were detecting and removing no
problem. But, some are happy with it!

Cheers

I hate to say it after years of AVG but I had the loop-a-boot problem with
AVG 7.0 and now I'm running Avast. Sorry its not much help, but it fixed my
problem.
