I have a customer with a near new laptop who I got all set up with a
wireless router a couple of weeks ago. The laptop has XP, SP2. He also
has a desktop computer running Windows 98. He has DSL. The desktop is
plugged directly into the router and the laptop is wireless. In the NIS
firewall settings I allowed the network range 192.168.1.1 to
192.168.1.254. Under Programs IE, FireFox, Outlook Express are all set to
automatic or "allow". The computers could swap files, and he was using
the desktop computer's printer to print from the laptop. Internet access
was working fine. He called this morning and everything had quit working
on the laptop. No internet access, couldn't print to the other computer.
I had him check his IP and it was 192.168.1.100, so obviously the router
was assigning an IP. He is not very computer savvy. He said that he
hadn't messed with any firewall settings... he wouldn't even know how to.
I had him turn off the firewall part of NIS and everything took off
working. I also led him through checking if the network range was still
programmed in and had him check if all his programs were listed and set
to automatic or allow. Everything was still set as they had been.
The desktop computer never had a problem... internet was OK.
So now he's running with the Norton firewall turned off and the Windows
firewall on. He lives a considerable distance away and I will have to go
and try to straighten the mess out. If it were mine, I'd dump NIS
altogether and install a seperate antivirus app and a seperate firewall.
But it "came with the computer and I have my year's subscription paid
up".
What do I look for?
Kinda off topic here I realize. What would be an appropriate group to
post this?

I,ve got exactly the same problem, can't access my e-mail via outlook
express or use firefox or IE, I can connect just can,t do anything. I can
however play my online games like city of heroes. To write this I,ve
disabled NIS for a short while I reckon symantec have screwed up somewhere

I've had NIS randomly start ignoring rules before, and once they were
deleted and re-entered, started working okay. For this reason I don't
use or advice on using NIS any more.
I would try removing all of the Trusted Zone IPs/range and re-entering
it, as well as doing so for the programs that are to be used. You could
also try checking out NIS's log, as it might be logging entries relating
to your problem. You could try enabling the Alert Tracker if it's off,
to see if it pops up anything while trying to browse/check email.
Have you ensure that XP's built-in firewall isn't being
interfered/switched on without someone realising? Also it might be worth
making sure the LAN IP range hasn't been entered into the Restricted
Zones for some strange reason.

OK, thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try all these things when I go
visit him.

Symantec offer a small "removal" tool for people having trouble
uninstalling/reinstalling NIS (or some other software titles). I've used
it on one occasion where I was trying to reinstall NIS but couldn't get
it to do the business. The removal tool cleared whatever was causing the
problem and NIS was reinstalled fine.
I haven't got the exact URL to hand, but if you search their site for
"removal" or "removal tool" you might be in luck. Make *sure* that you
get the tool for the correct version of NIS, as I believe they differ.
If you have no luck finding it reply back and I might be able to help.
HTH,
Adam.
